2Ectasy: เอาจริง ๆ เราแทบไม่ได้แก้อะไรกันเลยครับ เพลงนี้มันเกือบ 90% ตั้งแต่ตอนเราอยู่ที่ Song Camp แล้ว แต่ถ้าถามว่ามีแก้ไหม น่าจะมีแค่ครั้งเดียว ตรงท่อนของ jeffy ครับ

jeffy: ใช่ครับ ตอนแรกผมเขียนเวอร์ชั่นแรกเป็นอันที่ทุกคนได้ฟังนี่แหละครับ แต่พอกลับจาก Song Camp ไปเลยลองเขียนอีกเวอร์ชั่นหนึ่งดู สรุปทาง PROXIE ชอบเวอร์ชั่นแรกครับ แต่มีเอาประโยคจากเวอร์ชั่นสองมาเติมครับ ท่อน “ขอโทษที่ผมขี้แง แต่คนคนนี้มันคิดไปไกล yeah”

S4S: รู้สึกว่าท่อนไหนของเพลงนี้ที่สื่อถึงตัวตนของแต่ละคนออกมาได้ชัดเจนที่สุด?

2Ectasy: สำหรับโตะที่เด้งขึ้นมาในหัวเลยจะเป็นท่อน “นักกีฬามาชิงแชมป์ แต่เธอให้ผมน่ะชิงช้ำ” รู้สึกว่าท่อนนี้แหละลายเซ็นเรา เพราะเราเป็นคนคูล ๆ แถมขี้งอนนิดหน่อยครับ

kakagoesbackhome: ของก้า คิดว่าหลาย ๆ คนที่ได้ฟังเพลงนี้น่าจะนึกถึงท่อน “ป่ะป๊าหม่าม้าบอกไว้ว่าเป็นผู้ชายน่ะไม่ต้องร้อง” เลยคิดว่านี่แหละครับที่แสดงตัวตนของก้าได้ชัดที่สุดครับ

jeffy: รู้สึกว่าจะเป็นท่อน “Alright ท่องไว้ในใจให้จำว่า Boys Don’t Cry” คำว่า “Boys Don’t Cry” เป็นวลีที่ผมชอบมาก ๆ ครับเลยหยิบมาใช้กับเพลงนี้ครับ

archiesarchiesarchies.: ในพาร์ตของดนตรี ผมคิดว่ามันอยู่ที่การเลือกใช้ซาวด์มากกว่าครับ มองว่ามันสามารถนำมาใช้ร่วมกันให้เพลงนี้มันเกิดสีสัน คิดว่าน่าจะเป็นสิ่งที่ดีที่สุดในเพลงนี้ครับ

S4S: แล้วมีท่อนไหนไหมที่รู้สึกว่าเขียนยากมาก เพื่อให้เข้ากับ PROXIE ได้มากที่สุด?

2Ectasy: สไตล์เพลงของ PROXIE กับ SAUCE BKK ค่อนข้างไปในทิศทางเดียวกันครับ พอเพลงนี้ไปอยู่ในมือของ PROXIE เลยรู้สึกว่ามันลื่นไหลมาก แถมยังออกมาดีมาก ๆ จนเป็น ‘ขี้แง (Boys Don’t Cry)’ ที่ทุกคนได้ฟังไปครับ

kakagoesbackhome: น่าจะเป็นคำศัพท์ที่เราเลือกใช้ครับที่ทำให้รู้สึกว่ามันเตะหู แบบ “ที่บ้านเป็นพี่คนโตแต่ทำไมเธอให้เป็นแค่น้อง” อะไรแบบนี้ครับ พวกเราจะมีคำศัพท์แปลก ๆ ที่คนไม่ค่อยใช้กัน ทำให้คนหยุดฟังกัน รวมไปถึงพวกเมโลดี้ที่น่าจะเป็นส่วนหนึ่งที่ทำให้ติดหูด้วยครับ

“ขี้แง” ส่วนใหญ่เป็นคำที่ใช้ในเชิงล้อเลียน แต่เพลงนี้ตีความคำนี้ให้มีความหมายที่แตกต่างออกไป

jeffy: ผมรู้สึกว่าเพลงนี้ไม่ได้ตีความหมายคำว่า “ขี้แง” ไปในเชิงล้อเลียนครับ แต่ถูกตีความใหม่ในรูปแบบการยอมรับว่าถึงแม้เราจะเป็นผู้ชายก็ร้องไห้ได้ครับ มันเลยออกมาเป็นเนื้อเพลงแบบที่ทุกคนได้ฟังไปครับ

S4S: บรรยากาศวันอัดเพลงกับ PROXIE เป็นยังไงบ้างครับ?

kakagoesbackhome: สนุกครับ! ทุกคนใน PROXIE ซ้อมในส่วนของตัวเองมาอย่างดีครับ ไม่มีปัญหาอะไรเลย เพราะก่อนวันอัด ผมคุยกับทุกคนใน SAUCE BKK ว่าอยากให้ทาง PROXIE เป็นตัวเองที่สุด บวกกับการที่เราและทาง PROXIE อายุใกล้เคียงกัน การทำงานมันเลยออกมาสนุกมาก ๆ ไม่กดดันครับ พยายามทำให้ทุกคนสบายใจที่สุด เพราะคิดว่าการทำงานที่ดีเราไม่ควรที่จะเครียดครับ

2Ectasy: ถ้าใครได้ดู PROXIE Behind จะเห็นได้เลยว่าวันนั้นมู้ดดีมากครับ พวกเราสนุกกันมาก ๆ เลยครับ

jeffy: แต่ผมกดดันมากครับ เพราะนี่เป็นครั้งแรกของผมเลยที่ได้เขียนเพลงให้คนอื่น รวมถึงเป็นครั้งแรกที่ได้เจอ PROXIE ด้วย แต่เพราะว่าได้ทุกคนคอยซัปพอร์ต มันเลยผ่านไปได้ด้วยดีครับ

S4S: แล้วมีอะไรจะเม้ามอย PROXIE บ้างไหมครับ?

jeffy: พวกเขาเฟรนลี่กับเรามากครับ รู้สึกว่าเป็นการทำงานที่ใกล้ชิดกันมาก ๆ อย่างตอนทำดนตรีก็จะมี ‘กร PROXIE’ มานั่งเล่นกีตาร์กับพวกเราเลย ช่วยออกความเห็นว่าอยากได้ดนตรีแบบนี้นะ เลยรู้สึกว่าเป็นงานที่ช่วยเหลือกันและกันครับ เหมือนงานกลุ่ม

กว่าเพลงหนึ่งเพลงจะออกมาเป็นเพลงที่เราได้ฟังกัน ต้องมีหลายส่วนมาประกอบกันแน่นอนว่าผู้อยู่เบื้องหลังสิ่งเหล่านี้ย่อมเป็นโปรดิวเซอร์ ผู้ที่คอยรับหน้าที่สุดท้ายทำให้เพลงออกมาเป็นเวอร์ชั่นที่สมบูรณ์ที่สุด

S4S: การทำเพลงนี้มีหลายส่วนประกอบ มีพาร์ทไหนที่รู้สึกชอบแต่ต้องตัดออก เพื่อให้เพลงนี้สมบูรณ์แบบที่สุดไหม

archiesarchiesarchies.: จากตัวเดโม่ มันขาดพาร์ท Intro แล้วก็ยังไม่มีท่อน Solo ครับ ผมไม่คิดว่ามีท่อนที่ถูกตัดออกไป แต่เป็นท่อน Solo ครับที่เถียงกันว่าสรุปจะตัด หรือเติมเข้าไป แล้วตอนนั้นมันต้อง Mixed & Master แล้วครับ แต่ก็ยังตัดสินใจไม่ได้ว่าสรุปจะเอายังไง สุดท้ายก็เลยให้ทุกคนโหวตอันที่ชอบที่สุด แล้วเลือกอันนั้นครับ

kakagoesbackhome: แล้วตอนที่จะแก้ท่อน Solo ผมอยู่ต่างจังหวัดพอดี เลยต้องโทรคุยแก้งานกันกับเพื่อนผมอีกคน ผมคิดว่าแย่ละ แต่สุดท้ายก็ได้ท่อน Solo มาจนได้ครับ

archiesarchiesarchies.: สำหรับผมความยากอยู่ที่สเกลงานที่ใหญ่ครับ เพราะว่าจริง ๆ ในเพลงนี้มีไลน์ร้อง 8 คน ของ PROXIE 6 คน และคอรัสของ jeffy กับ kaka การที่จะทำให้ 8 ไลน์ร้อง สื่อสารออกมาร่วมกันได้ มันยากมากครับ เพราะแต่ละคนก็มีเอกลักษณ์ และน้ำเสียงที่แตกต่างกันออกไป ทำให้ปัญหาที่เจอในแต่ละคนเลยไม่เหมือนกัน ผมก็ต้องมาปรับให้เสียงของทุกคนเข้ากันได้ดีที่สุดครับ

นอกจากจะเขียนเนื้อเพลง ‘ขี้แง (Boys Don’t Cry) – PROXIE’ แล้ว SAUCE BKK ยังปล่อยเวอร์ชั่น COVER และ ANOTHER SESSIONS ที่ร่วมร้องกับ PROXIE ออกมาให้แฟน ๆ ได้ฟังกันด้วย

FORD TRIO วงดนตรีที่สร้างนิยามใหม่ของ ‘ซาวนด์แบบไทย ๆ’ และแนวดนตรี ‘NEO THAI FUNK’

FORD TRIO วงดนตรีไทยร่วมสมัยที่เชื่อมความเป็นไทยเข้ากับแรงบันดาลใจจากทั่วโลก โดดเด่นด้วยซาวนด์อันเป็นเอกลักษณ์และการผสานกลิ่นอาย Neo Soul, Alternative Rock และ Psychedelic จนกลายเป็นสไตล์เฉพาะตัวที่พวกเขาเรียกว่า Neo Thai Funk พร้อมการแสดงสดชวนโยกที่สร้างฐานผู้ฟังอันเหนียวแน่นในนาม ลัทธิคอไก่

FORD TRIO

ฝอด (ร้องนำ/กีตาร์), หมอ (เบส)

จุดเริ่มต้นของวงนั้นเรียบง่ายและไม่ได้แตกต่างจากวงอื่น ๆ สักเท่าไหร่ ฝอด (ร้องนำ/กีตาร์), หมอ (เบส), เจมส์ (กลอง) เพื่อน 3 คน เล่นเครื่องดนตรี 3 ชิ้น เรียนสาขาแต่งเพลงด้วยกันในรั้วมหาวิทยาลัย ฟอร์มวงขึ้นมาเพราะต้องการเล่นเพลงที่พวกเขาทำระหว่างเรียน และอยากมีอัลบั้มเป็นของตัวเอง

พวกเขาเริ่มปล่อยผลงาน ‘Rain Therapy – EP’ เป็นที่รู้จักมากขึ้น ได้ไปเล่นเทศกาลดนตรีต่าง ๆ จนกระทั่งเรียนจบ ตอนแรกพวกเขามีความคิดที่จะแยกย้ายกันไปตามเส้นทาง แต่จุดเปลี่ยนแรกของวงคือการได้เข้ามาร่วมงานกับค่าย Crazy Mondae (NewEchoes ในปัจจุบัน) นำพาให้วงได้เดินในเส้นทางดนตรีต่อมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน

“พวกเราได้เข้ามาทำงานร่วมกับค่าย ได้เจอกับ พี่เหลิม (Seal Pillow, GYMV) แกรู้สึกว่าอยากจะช่วยพัฒนาซาวนด์ของวงเราให้เอาไปขายต่างประเทศได้มากขึ้น ทีนี้วิธีการทำงานหรือแนวคิดของพวกเราก็เปลี่ยนไปอย่างสิ้นเชิงเลยครับ”

จากวงที่ไม่ได้มีเป้าหมายชัดเจน กลับกลายเป็นตอนนี้วงมีจุดมุ่งหมายที่อยากจะไปให้ถึงแล้ว แต่ด่านแรกที่พวกเขาต้องเจอคงหนีไม่พ้นเรื่อง ‘กำแพงภาษา’ แต่วงก็ยึดมั่นที่จะแต่งและร้องเพลงภาษาไทยต่อไป

“เราเองก็พราวด์ในการแต่งเพลง ร้องเพลงเป็นภาษาไทยอยู่แล้ว แต่ถ้าพวกเรายึดมั่นที่จะไปต่อในเวย์นี้ เราสามารถทำอะไรกับมันได้บ้าง ทำให้การทำเพลงของยุคนั้นมันจะมีชั้นเชิงดนตรี เมโลดี้ที่มันเข้าใจง่ายมากขึ้นครับ”

ประกอบกับการที่ FORD TRIO ได้มีโอกาสไปโชว์ที่ญี่ปุ่น ซึ่งเป็นอีกหนึ่งจุดเปลี่ยนของวงเลยก็ว่าได้ “ตอนนั้นพวกเราก็เอา setlist เพลงปกติที่เล่นที่ไทยไปแสดง มันก็มีทั้งดีและไม่ดีครับ พวกผู้ฟังญี่ปุ่นก็ไม่ได้เข้าใจภาษาไทยเหมือนที่ผู้ฟังไทยเก็ต หลังจากโชว์นั้นเราก็กลับมาทำการบ้านกันอย่างหนัก”

จากผลงานเพลงชุดแรกที่แนวดนตรีจะไปทาง Pop, Soul-Funk ผสมผสานกัน พวกเขาจึงกลับมาทบทวนตัวเองว่า ถ้าจะทำเพลงเพื่อไปให้ถึงระดับโกลบอลจริง ๆ พวกเขาต้องมีกิมมิกที่ไม่เหมือนใคร “เราก็กลับมามองวงตัวเองว่าวงของเราเป็นใครในแมปดนตรีโลก ถ้าเราเป็นวงดนตรี Soul-Funk โห มันมีเยอะมากเสียจนเรารู้สึกว่าที่เป็นมันยังโดดเด่นไม่พอ”

“ผมรู้จักและชื่นชอบวง Khruangbin (เครื่องบิน) ที่เอาไวบ์ของเครื่องดนตรีไทยไปผสมกับ Psychedelic จนสามารถสร้างซีนคนที่ชอบฟังดนตรีแนว Thai Funk-Psychedelic ตอนนั้นรู้สึกว่าเมโลดี้ที่พวกเขาเล่นมันเป็นอะไรที่พวกเราก็เล่นได้อยู่แล้ว เลยได้แรงบันดาลใจและกล้าที่จะใส่ซาวนด์แบบไทย ๆ เข้าไปในผลงานของเราครับ”

“ถึงแม้เราจะใส่ ‘ซาวนด์แบบไทย ๆ’ เข้าไปแต่เราก็ไม่ได้ทำดนตรีย้อนยุคแบบ Thai Funk ซะทีเดียว เราก็มีการผสมผสานสิ่งที่เราชอบ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น approach ของดนตรี Electronic, Alternative Rock ผลงานของเราเลยไม่ได้ออกมาเป็น Thai Funk แบบที่คนอื่นเขานิยามกัน”

“พวกเราเลยนิยามกันเองว่าสิ่งที่ทำอยู่มันคือแนวดนตรี ‘Neo Thai Funk’ ละกันครับ”

FORD TRIO ผ่านการเปลี่ยนผ่านทั้งวิธีคิด กระบวนการทำงาน จนมาถึงสมาชิกที่ตอนนี้คือพี่ฝอดและพี่หมอ แต่เอกลักษณ์เดิมที่ไม่เคยหายไปแต่กลับพัฒนายิ่งขึ้นนั่นคือการแสดงสด

อย่างที่เราเกริ่นไปว่าพวกเขาไม่ได้โดดเด่นแค่เรื่องซาวนด์ แต่การแสดงสดยังพาผู้ชมโยกจนเกิดเป็น ‘ลัทธิคอไก่’ ลัทธิที่แฟนคลับสร้างขึ้นมาจากพฤติกรรมเวลาได้ไปชมไปฟังการแสดงของวง “คำว่าคอไก่มันมาจากแอคชันของดนตรี Funk นี่แหละครับ เวลานักดนตรีเล่นหรือผู้ชมที่ฟังมันจะมีการโยกคอที่เหมือนไก่ ทีนี้แฟนคลับวงก็พากันเรียกตัวว่าเองว่าเป็นลัทธิคอไก่ขึ้นมา มีการทำสัญลักษณ์มือเป็นไก่ อะไรอย่างเนี่ย เลอะเทอะกันไปเรื่อยทั้งคนเล่นคนฟัง ฮ่า ๆๆๆ ถือว่าเป็นการสื่อสารกับผู้ชมครับ”

ไม่ใช่เพียงแค่คอไก่ แต่การ improvise ก็เป็นอีกหนึ่งจุดเด่นของวงที่ทำให้ Live Performance ครบรสมากยิ่งขึ้น ซึ่งจุดนี้มันก็มาจากการที่วงเลือกจะไม่เปิด data (คือ เสียงดนตรีและเสียงร้องประสานที่ถูกบันทึกไว้ล่วงหน้า เพื่อเปิดประกอบการเล่นดนตรีสด ช่วยเติมเต็มเสียงเครื่องดนตรีให้สมบูรณ์ยิ่งขึ้น)

“มันจะมีอยู่ยุคหนึ่งที่พวกเราตั้งคำถามกันว่าจะทำยังไงให้การเล่นสดของเราดีที่สุด เราจะเปิด data ไหม แต่คำตอบคือ ไม่อยากเปิดครับ”

“จริง ๆ การเปิด data มันดีนะครับ แต่ถ้าเราไม่เปิดแล้วมันดีกว่ายังไง ทีนี้พวกเราก็หาคำตอบกันหนักเลย จนพบว่าการไม่เปิดเนี่ยทำให้เรามีจังหวะได้ improvise มากกว่าเดิม บางท่อนเราจะยืดให้ยาวเท่าไหร่ก็ได้ หรือถ้าคิดจะทำอะไรก็ผู้ชมก็สามารถทำได้เลย มันสร้างโอกาสให้เราพลิกแพลงได้มากขึ้นครับ ถึงแม้บางครั้งจะเกิดผลแบบไม่ดีบ้าง แต่มันก็เป็นการดึงเสน่ห์ของการเล่นสดออกมา”

จุดนี้แหละจึงกลายเป็นจุดแข็งของวงอย่างไม่ต้องสงสัย การที่พวกเขาสามารถส่ง energy มาถึงผู้ชมได้อย่างต่อเนื่อง จึงทำให้วงเจอแนวทางของตัวเองอย่างชัดเจน ส่งผลมาถึงวิธีการสร้างผลงานในปัจจุบัน

“ผมก็คิดเอาเองนะว่าจุดเด่นของพวกเราคือการแสดงสด ถ้าอย่างนั้นเราก็อยากให้คนที่ฟัง audio อยู่ที่บ้านได้สัมผัสบรรยากาศและรู้สึกเหมือนเรากำลังเล่นสดให้ฟัง อย่างผลงานล่าสุดของพวกเรา ‘YANT – EP’ เราก็เรียบเรียงเพลงแบบตอนเล่นสด บันทึกเป็นแทร็กให้ทุกคนได้ฟังเลยครับ”

อีพีนี้นอกจากวิธีการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานจะเปลี่ยนไป การนำเสนอผลงานของวงก็เปลี่ยนไปเช่นกัน พวกเขาได้สร้างคอนเซปต์ ‘พิธีกรรม’ สำหรับการทำ Live Session ของอีพีนี้ ชื่อว่า ‘PLUK SEK SESSION’ ถ่ายทอดวิชันของวงที่มากกว่าแค่ดนตรี ผสมผสาน Performance Art ทำให้มีนักเต้นประกอบโชว์อยู่ตลอดเวลา

“พอได้ทำ ‘PLUK SEK SESSION’ พวกเราก็ชอบกันมากเลยครับ อยากจะนำมาต่อยอดในการแสดงสดของเราต่อ ๆ ไปได้ จึงเกิดเป็น ‘PLUKSE. SERVICE’ โชว์ที่ไม่ได้มีแค่เพลงจาก ‘YANT – EP’ เท่านั้น แต่มีเพลงอื่นร้อยเรียงเรื่องราว เหมือนผสมผสานกับศาสตร์การแสดงละครอีกทีครับ”

“การจะทำโชว์ในรูปแบบที่เต็มขนาดนี้ต้องแลกมาด้วยการทำงานที่ยากขึ้น จากการที่แค่เล่นดนตรี ทำเซตเพลงให้ดี ต่อเพลงให้เนียน เปลี่ยนเป็นต้องเล่าเรื่องราวแบ่งองก์เหมือนภาพยนตร์ แต่โชว์ยังต้องสนุก คนฟังยังได้ฟังเพลงที่อยากฟัง”

“การจัดการบนเวทีก็ยากขึ้นครับ เพราะเรามีทั้งนักเต้น Performance Art, ศาลเจ้ากลางเวที Installation Art, มีจอด้านหลังโดย Visual Designer, Lighting Designer มาช่วยจัดไฟ ทั้งหมดไปพร้อมกันเหมือน production คอนเสิร์ตเดี่ยว ตอนเล่นโชว์พวกเราก็สนุกกันมากครับ แต่หลังบ้านก็เพิ่มความยากขึ้นมาเช่นกัน”

THE ECHO OF THAI SOUND

ตลอดระยะเวลา 8-9 ปีของ FORD TRIO เราจะเห็นว่าพวกเขาผ่านจุดเปลี่ยนมามากมาย แต่สำหรับการเข้าร่วมโปรเจกต์ ‘THE ECHO OF THAI SOUND’ จากการผนึกพลังของ Marshall Livehouse, สำนักงานส่งเสริมเศรษฐกิจสร้างสรรค์ (องค์การมหาชน) หรือ CEA และบริษัท การบินไทย จำกัด (มหาชน) ถือว่าเป็นอีกหนึ่งจุดเปลี่ยนสำคัญ

‘THE ECHO OF THAI SOUND’ สร้างขึ้นเพื่อค้นหาและสนับสนุนศิลปินไทยรุ่นใหม่ ที่มีแนวคิด เสียง และทิศทางเป็นของตัวเอง พร้อมพาพวกเขาเข้าสู่เส้นทางการพัฒนาแบบครบวงจร ตั้งแต่การค้นหาและคัดเลือก การเวิร์กชอปกับผู้เชี่ยวชาญ การสร้างผลงาน ไปจนถึงการแสดงบนเวทีจริง และต่อยอดไปสู่ประสบการณ์ระดับนานาชาติ โดยนอกจาก FORD TRIO ยังมีอีก 5 ศิลปินที่เข้าร่วม ได้แก่ OFFICE SYNDROME, THE HYMMAPAN ELECTRON, NIXSA JINGLE, FORDECISION, RATTANAKOSIN BREAKIN CREW

“FORD TRIO เดินทางมาถึงปีที่ 9 ก็จริง แต่พวกเราก็ทำกันมาแบบไม่มี know-how ก็ว่าได้ ทำกันมาเรื่อย ๆ เปลี่ยนทิศทางตามใจตัวเอง บางทีพวกเราก็อยากกลับมาตั้งคำถาม ทบทวนกับสิ่งที่เราทำกันมา ซึ่งโปรเจกต์นี้ก็ช่วยให้กลับมาคิดอย่างจริงจัง แล้วก็ได้แชร์ความคิดกับพี่ ๆ วงอื่นที่มีเส้นทางต่างกันด้วย”

“สำหรับเวิร์กชอปกับ mentor ระดับอาจารย์อย่าง ‘โอม ปัณฑพล’ ก็สนุกมากครับ ผมคิดว่าสิ่งสำคัญคือการแลกเปลี่ยน know-how กันนี่แหละครับ เพราะว่าการเป็นศิลปินมันไม่ได้มีสูตรสำเร็จตายตัว ความรู้มันมาจากประสบการณ์มากกว่า ซึ่งพี่ ๆ ก็แชร์กันอย่างจัดเต็มเลยครับ”

“ส่วนกับพี่ ‘Maft Sai’ ผมก็ได้รู้แนวคิดการส่งออกซาวนด์แบบไทยของเขา เพราะพี่เขาเป็นดีเจที่มีเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะตัว มีซาวนด์ของตัวเองที่อยู่ในแมปโลกดนตรีจริง ๆ ก็นำมาปรับใช้กับวงเราได้โดยตรงเลยครับ”

พอเราถามพี่ฝอดถึงแนวทางในอนาคตหรือเป้าหมายของวงก็ได้คำตอบมาว่า “เราจะพยายามปั้นคำว่า ‘Neo Thai Funk’ ให้เป็น genre จริง ๆ ถ้าเปิดแผนที่โลกแล้วมองมาที่ประเทศไทย เฮ้ย มันมี T-Pop แล้วก็มี T-Funk ว่ะ แต่ว่าเป็น Neo Thai Funk นะครับ”

หลังจากที่พวกเขามาระเบิดความมันส์ไปกับ King Gnu CEN+RAL Tour 2026 in Bangkok เมื่อวันเสาร์ที่ 23 พฤษภาคม 2569 พวกเรา S4S มีโอกาสได้พูดคุยกับสมาชิกวง King Gnu เพื่อพาทุกคนไปทำความรู้จักอีกแง่มุมหนึ่งของพวกเขาที่ผสมผสานเรื่องดนตรีเข้าไลฟ์สไตล์ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นแฟชั่นสไตล์การแต่งตัวของสมาชิกแต่ละคน ย่านในโตเกียวที่สายแฟชั่นต้องไป ต่อเนื่องถึงเรื่อง Official Merchandise ของทัวร์ครั้งนี้

เราเชื่อว่าวงที่มีเอกลักษณ์โดดเด่นจนสามารถสร้าง Subculture ของตัวเองได้อย่างแท้จริง ต้องมีแนวคิดที่แตกต่างจากคนอื่นเป็นธรรมดา หลายคนนิยามว่าพวกเขาคือดนตรีแนว J-Pop หรือ J-Rock แต่ด้วยหลากหลายรสชาติของ King Gnu ทำให้วงไม่ได้ถูกจำกัดความอยู่แค่แนวดนตรีเหล่านั้น พวกเขาจึงนิยามตนเองว่า ‘Tokyo New Mixture Style’ ซะเลย

Tsuneta Daiki: โคเอ็นจิ (Koenji) ก็ดีนะครับ ส่วนชิโมคิตะซาวะ (Shimokitazawa) ตอนนี้ก็มีคนจากต่างประเทศมาเยอะมาก ร้านเสื้อผ้ามือสองก็มีเยอะแยะไปหมด

Arai Kazuki: สองย่านนี้มีร้านวินเทจเยอะมากครับ แล้วตัวเมืองเองก็มีเป็นเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะตัว ไปเดินแล้วสนุกแน่นอนครับ

Seki Yu: ย่านคาบุกิโจ (Kabukicho) จะมีร้าน Select Shop ชื่อว่า “FOUR-EYED” เป็นร้านที่คัดเสื้อผ้าแนวจัดจ้านและมีเอกลักษณ์มากครับ ทางเข้าจะอยู่ตรงทางเข้าของโรงแรมเลิฟโฮเทล พอเดินผ่านตัวโรงแรม เข้าไปข้างในจะกลายเป็นร้านเสื้อผ้า เป็นสถานที่ที่น่าสนใจมากครับ

In Search of Quiet: The Art of Inward Listening with ‘Devon Turnbull’

หลายคนที่ชอบเครื่องเสียง คงไม่มีใครไม่รู้จัก Devon Turnbull อย่างแน่นอน หลังจากที่เขาเคยมาร่วมฉลองครบรอบ 10 ปีของ Siwilai เมื่อ 2 ปีก่อน (2024) ครั้งนี้เขาได้กลับมาเยือนประเทศไทยอีกครั้ง เราเลยได้มีโอกาสได้คุยถึงความหลงใหลในเสียงเพลง สู่การก่อตั้งแบรนด์ลำโพงอย่าง OJAS รวมถึงเจาะลึกวิธีการสร้างสรรค์ลำโพงของเขากันครับ

เส้นทางชีวิตของ Devon Turnbull ค่อนข้างซับซ้อน เขาเรียนจบปริญญาตรีด้านวิศวกรรมเสียง และเริ่มต้นอาชีพการทำงานในวงการเสียง จนได้ต่อยอดสู่การทำแบรนด์เสื้อผ้าของตัวเอง จากพื้นฐานด้านศิลปะในช่วงวัยรุ่น ผ่านการพ่นกราฟฟิตี้ และการเรียนศิลปะร่วมสมัย (Contemporary Art) ในด้านภัณฑารักษ์ และนักวิจารณ์

รวมถึงการได้ซึมซับคัลเจอร์ต่าง ๆ ในย่าน Downtown มาเต็มที่ ถึงแม้แบรนด์เสื้อผ้าของเขาจะไปได้สวย แต่กลับไม่มีเวลาทำเพลงเลย ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่เขาชอบที่สุด เขาจึงเริ่มเปลี่ยนบริบทจากการ “ทำ” เป็นการ “ฟัง” แทน นั่นจึงเป็นครั้งแรกที่ Devon Turnbull เริ่มทำอุปกรณ์เครื่องเสียงของตัวเอง เพราะอยากจะใกล้ชิดกับเสียงให้ได้มากที่สุด ด้วยการบันทึกเสียงเหล่านั้นไว้

ในช่วง 10 – 15 ปีแรกที่ทำไม่มีใครรู้จักลำโพงของเขาเลย มีแต่กลุ่มเพื่อนที่คอยซัปพอร์ต จนในที่สุดผลงานก็เริ่มเป็นที่รู้จัก และถูกเผยแพร่ไปทั่วโลกในเวลาต่อมา

S4S: เวลาที่คุณพูดถึงวิศวกรรมเสียง มันหมายถึงการบันทึกเสียงใช่ไหมครับ?

Devon Turnbull: ใช่ครับ เน้นไปทางการบันทึกเสียง ซึ่งสองอย่างนี้ (การบันทึกเสียง และลำโพง) มันเกี่ยวข้องกันในแบบที่แยกออกจากกันไม่ได้ แต่บางครั้งผมก็มีการปรับแต่ง (Re-Specification) Equipment ของตัวเองบางส่วน เพื่อให้มันทำงานร่วมกันได้ดียิ่งขึ้นครับ

ตอนที่ Devon Turnbull ทำแบรนด์เสื้อผ้า อาศัยอยู่ที่ญี่ปุ่นเป็นหลัก ทำให้ได้เห็นวัฒนธรรมด้านเสียงของญี่ปุ่น และได้เห็นมุมมองต่าง ๆ ในการทำลำโพงแบบ DIY รวมถึงได้เรียนรู้การทำลำโพงจากวัตถุดิบแบบดิบ ๆ และวัสดุที่ไม่น่าทำออกมาเป็นเครื่องเสียงได้อย่างไม้อัด หรือโลหะ ให้กลายมาเป็นเครื่องเสียงคุณภาพดีได้

S4S: แล้วการตอบรับในช่วงแรก ๆ เป็นยังไงบ้างครับ

Devon Turnbull: ผมไม่เคยเปิดตัว OJAS ในฐานะแบรนด์อย่างเป็นทางการเลย มันเป็นเหมือนโปรเจกต์ส่วนตัวของผมครับ ผมรู้สึกโชคดีที่มีเพื่อนต่างวัยหลายคนที่เป็นเหมือนฮีโร่ในวงการเครื่องเสียง Hi-Fi ของผม อย่างที่ทุกคนรู้ว่าตลาดเครื่องเสียงระดับไฮเอนด์หดตัวลงมานานแล้ว ทำให้วงการนี้ขาดคนรุ่นใหม่เข้ามาสานต่อ เขาจึงรู้สึกเป็นเกียรติที่ได้สานต่อวงการนี้ และได้นำเสนอไฟล์เสียงรูปแบบใหม่ ๆ ให้คนรุ่นใหม่ได้รู้จักครับ

ไม่ว่าจะเป็นโปรเจกต์ไหน Devon Turnbull มักจะใช้วิธีการทำงานรูปแบบเดิมเสมอ คือเริ่มจากการทำในสิ่งที่ตัวเองรู้สึกตื่นเต้น และเน้นไปที่การสร้างประสบการณ์ด้านเสียง ด้วยพื้นฐานทางด้านศิลปะ ทำให้เขาได้รับโอกาสจากเพื่อน ๆ ในวงการในการทำผลงาน โดยโปรเจกต์แรก เป็นการดูแลระบบเสียงให้สตรีทแวร์ระดับตำนานอย่าง Supreme ทุกสาขาทั่วโลก ซึ่งในสมัยนั้นการติดตั้งระบบเสียงในร้านเสื้อผ้ายังเป็นเรื่องที่ใหม่ และไม่จำเป็นด้วยซ้ำ แต่เพื่อนของเขากลับมองผลงานของ OJAS เป็นเรื่องที่น่าตื่นเต้น และสามารถสร้างแรงบันดาลใจให้คนอื่นได้

Devon Turnbull: ใช่ครับ ผมคิดว่าแนวเสียงที่ผมต้องการ มันไม่ใช่แนวคิดที่แปลกใหม่หรอกครับ เหมือนเป็นกลุ่มเล็ก ๆ ในวงการ Hi-Fi ที่ชื่นชอบลำโพงขนาดใหญ่เป็นพิเศษ ปกติแล้วลำโพงของผมมักจะมีขนาดใหญ่เกินไปที่จะวางขาตั้ง หรือฐานแหลมได้ครับ

ผมเริ่มจากการเป็นผู้บริโภคที่ซื้ออุปกรณ์ที่ดีที่สุดอยู่ตลอดเวลา จนวันหนึ่งผมได้รู้จักคอมมูนิตี้คนรักเครื่องเสียงวินเทจที่ญี่ปุ่น ทำให้ผมเปลี่ยนความคิดไปตลอดกาล

“ของดีมีคุณภาพ ไม่จำเป็นต้องแพงเสมอไป”

นั่นเป็นเหตุผลที่ผมทำ OJAS ออกมาในรูปแบบของกล่องธรรมดา แต่ซ่อนคุณภาพที่ดีเอาไว้ จนหลายคนที่ไม่เข้าใจต่างวิพากษ์วิจารณ์ลำโพงของผมต่าง ๆ นานา สิ่งที่ผมจะบอกคือ เสียงที่ผมพยายามทำมันไม่ได้ตามกระแสหลัก และไม่ใช่เพราะผมไม่มีเงิน แต่เพราะผมแค่ชอบเสียงของอุปกรณ์ที่ผมกำลังทำอยู่ต่างหาก แล้วคุณรู้ไหมว่าวัสดุบางชิ้นที่ผมใช้ทำลำโพง มันแพงและทำยากกว่าลำโพงทั่วไปซะอีก

Devon Turnbull ได้ออกแบบลำโพงให้กับทาง Siwilai Sound Club และ Siwilai Radical Club เพื่อมอบประสบการณ์เสียงคุณภาพสูงที่ดีให้กับลูกค้าที่มาใช้บริการที่ร้าน

S4S: มาพูดถึงมุมมองที่คุณมีต่อประเทศไทยบ้าง หลังจากที่คุณเคยมาที่นี่ครั้งแรกเมื่อ 2 ปีก่อนในงานครบรอบ 10 ปีของ Siwilai เป็นยังไงบ้าง?

Devon Turnbull: ผมรู้สึกยินดีที่ได้กลับมาที่นี่อีกครั้งครับ แน่นอนว่าครั้งแรกมันตื่นเต้นสำหรับผม เพราะไม่รู้ว่าจะเกิดอะไรขึ้นที่นี่บ้าง แต่ครั้งนี้ผมรู้สึกเหมือนได้อยู่บ้าน รู้สึกดีใจมาก ๆ ครับที่ได้กลับมาที่ประเทศไทย

Elbo: Hello, my name is ‘Elbo,’ also known as ‘Elbo Glass.’ I’m a glass artist from the United States.

ELBO GLASS is a globally recognized glass artist known for his functional glass works, combining usability with his signature “dinosaur” motifs, creating glass pieces that are both artistic and practical.

S4S: Why did you choose to live in Thailand?

Elbo: When I first came here, I was surprised by the energy of the people, as well as the art and culture. I completely fell in love with it.

S4S: Is there a place in Thailand that you especially fell in love with?

Elbo: For me, it has to be Bangkok. The energy of the people here reminds me of New York City.

S4S: When did you first discover glassblowing as an art form?

Elbo: I was introduced to glass art at the Tyler School of Art & Architecture at Temple University, where I learned the fundamentals of glassblowing.

S4S: คุณเลือกทำศิลปะเป่าแก้วเป็นอย่างแรกเลยไหม หรือเคยทำศิลปะแขนงอื่นมาก่อน?

S4S: Was glass art your first artistic path, or did you explore other art forms before that?

Elbo: Before glassblowing, I focused entirely on painting during my teenage years, before I explored three-dimensional works.

S4S: What is it about art that makes you so passionate?

Elbo: You know what? The first time I touched glass, I immediately knew this was what I would do for the rest of my life. Glassblowing opened new perspectives for me. The first time I worked with it, I felt like glass was an ‘alien’ material. Glass art may not be as approachable as painting or ceramics for some people, but the first time you truly experience glass, it feels like being reborn.

S4S: Is the glassblowing process different from other forms of art?

Elbo: It’s definitely different. Glass is a material that requires a lot of caution because it can break at any moment while you’re working. That’s why every step needs close attention, and a single piece can take weeks or even months to complete. Because glass is such a fragile material, this is what really sets glass art apart from other art forms.

S4S: Does it feel similar to working with clay, from your perspective?

Elbo: When you’re working with clay, if you don’t like the shape, it’s easy to reshape it or start over. The same goes for painting, where you can paint over mistakes. But that doesn’t apply to glassblowing, because the material is extremely is not forgiving and cannot be worked in the same way.

S4S: Do you remember your very first piece?

Elbo: I think it was a drinking glass. It was one of the first things I tried to make, and it’s actually very difficult to turn it into any other shape. But if we’re talking about my first true art piece as Elbo, it would be a ‘pickle jar with glass pickles inside.’

Elbo: ปกติผมทำผลงานอยู่แต่ในสตูดิโอของตัวเอง การที่ผมได้ไปร่วมทำงานกับแบรนด์ระดับโลก ทำให้ผมได้พบเจอผู้คนใหม่ ๆ วัฒนธรรมใหม่ ๆ นั่นทำให้ผมได้มีไอเดีย และแนวคิดในการทำงานที่กว้างขี้น

Beyond the intricate details and delicate craftsmanship of his glassblowing work, another defining symbol of Elbo’s identity is the ‘dinosaur.’ This signature motif, which makes his work instantly recognizable, originates from a deeply personal story that became a lasting source of inspiration and evolved into a hallmark of his art.

S4S: The dinosaur that appears as a signature in your work came from a gift from someone you loved, right?

Elbo: When I first started my journey in glassblowing, I was dating someone at the time. She gave me a small ‘glass dinosaur’ as a gift. Even though we later went our separate ways, that gift sparked something in me and became a major source of inspiration.

Through his distinctive body of work, Elbo has grown into a world-class glass artist whose creations have attracted collaborations with global brands such as The Hundreds, Topps, and most recently the Japanese streetwear label #FR2 (Fxxking Rabbits).

S4S: How does it feel to collaborate with global brands like The Hundreds, Topps, and #FR2?

Elbo: Normally, I work alone in my own studio. Getting the chance to collaborate with global brands allows me to meet new people and experience new cultures. That exposure has helped broaden my ideas and creative perspective.

S4S: ในอนาคตมีแบรนด์ไหนที่คุณอยากร่วมงานด้วยไหม?

Elbo: แบรนด์ที่ผมอยากร่วมงานด้วยคือ ‘Rimowa’ ครับ เป็นการร่วมงานในฝันของผมเลย

S4S: นอกจากแบรนด์ในฝันแล้ว มีศิลปินไทยคนไหนที่คุณอยากร่วมงานด้วยไหม?

Elbo: ถ้าเป็นไปได้ผมอยากร่วมงานกับ ‘HAIHAITOON’ ครับ เขาเป็นศิลปินจิตรกรรมที่ผมชื่นชอบที่สุดในไทยตอนนี้ หรืออาจจะเป็น ‘Alex Face’ เป็นอีกหนึ่งศิลปินที่สุดยอดมากที่อยู่ที่นี่ แต่ถ้าเลือกได้คงเป็น ‘HAIHAITOON’ คาดหวังให้เป็นแบบนั้นครับ

S4S: Are there any brands you dream of collaborating with in the future?

Elbo: The brand I’d love to work with is Rimowa. It’s truly a dream collaboration for me.

S4S: Besides dream brands, are there any Thai artists you’d like to collaborate with?

Elbo: If possible, I’d love to work with ‘HAIHAITOON.’ He’s my favorite painter in Thailand right now. Another artist I really admire is ‘Alex Face,’ who is also incredibly talented. But if I had to choose one, it would definitely be ‘HAIHAITOON.’ That’s what I’m hoping for.

S4S: คุณมีเป้าหมายที่จะผลักดันศิลปะเป่าแก้วให้ไปถึงระดับไหน และอยากส่งต่อศิลปะแนวนี้ให้คนรุ่นใหม่ได้รู้ยังไง

Elbo: เป้าหมายของผมคือ ผมอยากฝากผลงานของตัวเองไว้ในหน้าประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะ และหวังว่างานเหล่านั้นจะได้ไปจัดแสดงในแกลเลอรีและพิพิธภัณฑ์ทั่วโลก เพื่อส่งต่อแรงบันดาลใจให้กับคนรุ่นต่อไป

S4S: Do you think glassblowing can integrate into other cultures in the same way as other art forms?

Elbo: I believe glassblowing has a very strong foundation, because glass already exists in our everyday lives. People can now easily learn about this art form through different media as well. That’s why I feel glassblowing has already reached a global level.

S4S: How far do you hope to take glassblowing as an art form, and how would you like to pass it on to the next generation?

Elbo: My goal is to leave my work in the history of art. I hope my pieces will be exhibited in galleries and museums around the world so they can inspire future generations.

S4S: ตอนนี้คุณอยู่ประเทศไทยเป็นหลักใช่ไหม แล้วอะไรคือเสน่ห์ของประเทศไทยที่ทำให้คุณย้ายมาใช้ชีวิตอยู่ที่นี่?

Mitsubishi: ใช่ครับ ตอนนี้ผมอาศัยอยู่ประเทศไทย ผมเคยมาประเทศไทยเมื่อ 40 ปีที่แล้ว เพราะมีเพื่อนอยู่ที่นี่ ประเทศไทยมีอาหารที่ดี ผู้คนที่น่ารัก สำหรับผมประเทศไทยเป็นประเทศที่น่าตื่นเต้นที่สุด!

S4S: การที่เป็นคนญี่ปุ่นมาใช้ชีวิตในประเทศไทย ยากไหมกับการปรับตัว เรื่องภาษา อาหาร วัฒนธรรม

Mitsubishi: สำหรับผมไม่มีปัญหาเลยครับ ไม่ว่าจะเรื่องภาษา อาหาร หรือแม้แต่ผู้คนที่นี่

S4S: ตอนนี้คุณทำงานอะไรอยู่บ้าง?

Mitsubishi: หลัก ๆ ผมเป็น Creative Director และ Brand Architect รวมไปถึงทำงานให้กับให้ที่นี่ด้วยครับ (Haight & Ashbury Bangkok)

S4S: Please introduce yourself.

Mitsubishi: My name is ‘Tetsuo Mitsubishi.’ I’m from Japan. I was born in Tokyo and grew up in Yokohama.

S4S: You are currently based in Thailand, right? What is it about Thailand that made you decide to live here?

Mitsubishi: Yes, I’m currently living in Thailand. I first visited about 40 years ago because I had friends here. The food is amazing, the people are kind, and for me, Thailand is the most exciting country!

S4S: As a Japanese person living in Thailand, was it difficult to adapt to the language, food, or culture?

Mitsubishi: For me, there’s no difficulty at all, whether it’s the language, the food, or the people.

S4S: What kind of work are you currently doing?

Mitsubishi: Mainly, I work as a Creative Director and Brand Architect. I’m also working here in Thailand with Haight & Ashbury Bangkok.

Mitsubishi: ตอนผมยังเป็นวัยรุ่น ได้เห็นวัยรุ่นที่ญี่ปุ่นแต่งตัวกันอย่างสนุกสนาน นั้นเป็นจุดเริ่มที่ทำให้หลงใหลในสตรีทแฟชั่นครับ

Before stepping into the role of Creative Director for brands such as SOPH., Nike, adidas, Supreme, and others, Tetsuo Mitsubishi began his career at the age of 19 as a writer. He wrote for iconic Japanese magazines like HOT DOG PRESS and CHECK MATE, while also freelancing for i-D (UK & Japan) and Asayan. His writing gained a strong following, which became a key turning point that led him into the world of street fashion.

Beyond writing, Mitsubishi also played a significant role as an event organizer for legendary Tokyo clubs such as GOLD and CAVE, spaces widely recognized as early birthplaces of Japanese street culture.

S4S: What was the starting point of your fascination with street fashion?

Mitsubishi: When I was a teenager, I saw young people in Japan dressing in such a fun and expressive way. That was the moment I fell in love with street fashion.

Mitsubishi: ผมได้เรียนรู้จากผู้คนที่นั่น ประสบการณ์ต่าง ๆ ในชีวิตของผม 80% มาจากนิวยอร์กเลย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นในวงการแฟชั่น วงการเพลง หรือแม้แต่นิตยสารก็ดี ผมมักได้ไอเดียดี ๆ จากการที่ได้พูดคุยกับผู้คนที่นั่นเยอะมาก

S4S: หลังจากจุดนั้นคุณต่อยอดสิ่งเหล่านี้อย่างไรบ้าง?

Mitsubishi: ช่วงนั้นเป็นช่วงปลาย 90’s เข้าปี 2000 ที่อินเตอร์เน็ตกำลังเข้ามามีบทบาท ทำให้กระแสของวงการแฟชั่น และเพลง มีความเปลี่ยนแปลงเกิดขึ้น ว่าสิ่งไหนกำลังจะขึ้นหรือลง ทำให้ผมได้หยิบตรงนั้นมาเรียนรู้ครับ

After working as a writer, Mitsubishi joined Sony Music Entertainment (Epic Records), where he handled public relations, artist direction, and brand development for emerging artists. Eventually, he left everything behind in Japan and moved to New York City to gain new experiences and broaden his perspective.

S4S: How did living in New York elevate your life or influence your approach to fashion?

Mitsubishi: I learned so much from the people there. About 80% of my life experience comes from New York. Whether it’s fashion, music, or magazines, I often get great ideas just from talking to people there.

S4S: After that period, how did you build on those experiences?

Mitsubishi: That was the late ’90s, moving into the 2000s, when the internet started to play a major role. Fashion and music scenes were changing rapidly. You could feel what was about to rise or fall, and I focused on learning from those shifts.

Mitsubishi: What is The Wild Bunch – SOPH. 20th Anniversary Special Documentary เพราะสารคดีนี้พูดถึงการเติบโตของวัฒนธรรมฮิปฮอปในสหราชอาณาจักรและญี่ปุ่น รวมไปถึงยังมีการนำ DJ Milo, Daddy G, Jazzie B, Soul2Soul, UNKLE และคนอื่น ๆ มาร่วมในสารคดีนี้ด้วย นี่คือหนึ่งในผลงานที่ผมประทับใจที่สุด และอีกผลงานที่ผมชอบคือ หนังสือ BURTON เป็นอีกหนึ่งโปรเจกต์ที่ดีที่ผมเคยทำมาเลยครับ

From that point on, Mitsubishi had the opportunity to work with Supreme (Japan) as a Creative Director, shaping the brand’s image through magazines and advertising during its early phase. This later led to collaborations with other global brands such as adidas, Nike, Reebok, Dr. Martens, SOPH., and more.

S4S: What are the main challenges of working with global brands like adidas, Nike, and Supreme?

Mitsubishi: Maintaining consistent quality that meets the standards of global brands is essential. Staying calm, focused, and communicating clearly are also very important when working at an international level.

S4S: What have you learned from working with global brands?

Mitsubishi: Good communication and mutual understanding are key to working smoothly with global brands. When I worked in New York, I met people from many different cultures and languages, which taught me a lot about how to collaborate effectively.

S4S: Looking back, which project has left the strongest impression on you?

Mitsubishi: ‘What is The Wild Bunch – SOPH. 20th Anniversary Special Documentary.’ This documentary talks about the growth of hip-hop culture in both the UK and Japan, and it features artists such as DJ Milo, Daddy G, Jazzie B, Soul2Soul, UNKLE, and others. It’s one of the projects I’m most proud of. Another project I really enjoyed was the BURTON book, which was also a great experience for me.

S4S: Are there any projects you still want to do but haven’t had the chance to yet?

Mitsubishi: There are many! But for now, I’ll keep them a secret. I can’t share the details just yet.

Beyond his role as a Creative Director, Tetsuo Mitsubishi is also the founder of several businesses. One of his most influential projects is Woofin’ Magazine (1997), a publication that helped establish his reputation. As Japan’s first hip-hop and fashion magazine, Woofin’ became a bridge connecting Japanese street culture with the Western world. His most recent venture is ‘Playford Capital’ (2025), a multidisciplinary brand that brings together fashion, music, and events under one platform.

S4S: ทำไมคุณถึงเลือกทำธุรกิจที่ประเทศไทย?

Mitsubishi: กรุงเทพฯ เป็นเมืองที่น่าตื่นเต้นสำหรับผม รวมไปถึงผมมีเพื่อนที่อยู่ที่นี่ และผู้คนที่นี่ก็ดีกับผมมากครับ เป็นเหตุผลที่ทำให้ผมเลือกทำธุรกิจที่นี่ครับ

S4S: Why did you choose to build your business in Thailand?

Mitsubishi: Bangkok is a very exciting city for me. I have friends here, and the people have always been very kind to me. That’s why I chose to do business here.

S4S: Could you tell us more about your new business, ‘Playford Capital’?

Mitsubishi: ‘Playford Capital’ is still a small brand at the moment. The logo was designed by SK8THING (Shinichiro Nakamura), a legendary graffiti artist who has worked with BAPE (A Bathing Ape) and BBC (Billionaire Boys Club). We also collaborated with Kosuke Kawamura, Creative Director of Uniqlo’s UT Collection, to design new styles of clothing.

เป็นโอกาสอันดีที่ S4S ได้กลับมาพูดคุยกับ ‘Alex Face’ ในรอบ 11 ปี ศิลปินสตรีทอาร์ตที่ใครหลายคน ต่างก็เคยเห็นผลงานของเขาผ่านตามาบ้าง ตามกำแพงบนตึก หรือตามตรอกซอกซอยต่าง ๆ ที่มักจะมีผลงานของเขาประดับอยู่บนนั้นเสมอ กับผลงานล่าสุดในโปรเจกต์ ‘Krung Thep Creative Streets’

It’s a special occasion for S4S to sit down once again with ‘Alex Face’ after 11 years. Many of you have surely come across his work, whether on walls, buildings, or hidden alleyways; his art is always there to leave a mark. His latest project, Krung Thep Creative Streets, continues that tradition.

‘อเล็กซ์ – พัชรพล แตงรื่น’ หรือ ‘Alex Face’ เจ้าของคาแรกเตอร์ ‘มาร์ดี’ กระต่ายน้อยสามตาหน้าบึ้ง ที่เราคุ้นหน้าคุ้นตากันเป็นอย่างดี ศิลปินสตรีทอาร์ตที่โลดแล่นอยู่ในวงการมาแล้วกว่า 20 ปี ผู้พาผลงานสตรีทอาร์ตของไทย ไปสร้างชื่อเสียงให้ต่างชาติได้รู้จัก!

S4S: แนะนำตัวหน่อยครับ

Alex Face: สวัสดีครับ ชื่อ ‘พัชรพล แตงรื่น’ อยู่บ้านแม่เรียก ‘ตู่’ อยู่กรุงเทพฯ เพื่อนเรียก ‘อเล็กซ์’ ครับ หรือที่รู้จักกันในชื่อ ‘Alex Face’ เป็นศิลปินอิสระครับ

S4S: อะไรทำให้พี่อเล็กซ์อยากเดินในเส้นทางศิลปะครับ?

Alex Face: ย้อนกลับไปช่วงมัธยมต้น เราชอบวาดรูปเป็นทุนเดิมอยู่แล้ว เลยเป็นตัวแทนโรงเรียนเพื่อประกวดวาดรูปอยู่บ่อย ๆ จึงได้ใช้เวลาคลุกคลีอยู่กับศิลปะ บวกกับตอนนั้นมีครูที่คอยให้คำแนะนำ มีเพื่อนที่วาดรูปไปด้วยกัน เรารู้สึกชอบบรรยากาศในช่วงนั้นมาก เราหมดเวลาไปกับการฝึกวาดรูปเยอะมาก เพราะต้องแข่งเลยซ้อมหนัก เป็นแบบนี้ตั้งแต่ม.1 – ม.3 พอเราจบมัธยมต้นมา ทำให้เรารู้ตัวเองว่าอยากเดินทางไปเส้นทางนี้ อยากเรียนศิลปะ

‘Alex – Patcharapol Tangruen,’ better known as ‘Alex Face,’ is the creator of the iconic grumpy three-eyed rabbit ‘Mardi.’ Having been active in the street art scene for over 20 years, he has taken Thai street art onto the international stage and earned global recognition.

S4S: Could you introduce yourself?

Alex Face: Hello, my name is Patcharapol Tangruen. At home, my family calls me ‘Tu,’ but my friends in Bangkok know me as ‘Alex.’ Most people recognize me as ‘Alex Face.’ I’m a freelance artist.

S4S: What made you want to pursue the path of art?

Alex Face: Going back to middle school, I had always loved drawing, so I often represented my school in art competitions. That gave me the chance to spend a lot of time surrounded by art. At the same time, I had teachers who supported me and friends who also loved drawing. I really enjoyed that atmosphere. I would spend countless hours practicing because I had to compete, so I trained hard. This went on from Grade 7 to Grade 9, and by the time I finished junior high, I knew I wanted to walk down this path and study art.

S4S: พอบอกพ่อแม่ว่าจะไปเรียนต่อในสายศิลปะ พ่อแม่ว่ายังไงบ้างครับ?

Alex Face: พ่อแม่ก็ไม่ค่อยโอเคเท่าไหร่ครับ เพราะในยุคที่เรายังเด็ก ๆ มุมมองที่คนมีต่อศิลปะ มันดูไม่มั่นคง เลยไม่อยากให้ไปเรียนสักเท่าไหร่ครับ แต่เขาก็มีทางเลือกให้เราว่าไปเรียนสถาปัตยกรรมไหม เพราะพ่อแม่คิดว่ามันได้ขีดเขียนเหมือนกัน แต่สำหรับเรามันไม่เหมือนกันเลย เราอยากเรียนศิลปะ อยากเรียนวาดรูปมากกว่า

S4S: แล้วทำยังไงพ่อแม่ถึงยอมให้ไปเรียนครับ?

Alex Face: ลองสู้มันสักตั้งหนึ่ง เอาวะ! ลองหาข้อมูลไปให้พ่อแม่ดูว่า ถ้าเราเรียนศิลปะ แล้วมันจะไปต่อยอดยังไงได้บ้าง ซึ่งตอนนั้นอินเตอร์เน็ตยังไม่รู้จักเลยนะ แต่เราก็หาเอกสาร หนังสือแนะแนวเพื่อมายืนยันว่า การเรียน ปวช. หรือ ปวส. ของเรา สุดท้ายปลายทางก็คือ การเรียนจบรับปริญญาเหมือนคนอื่น ๆ ตามที่พ่อแม่หวังไว้ได้เหมือนกัน เขาเห็นว่าเราพยายาม และมีความมุ่งมั่น เลยยอมให้ไปเรียนศิลปะในที่สุดครับ

S4S: หลังจากเข้ามหาวิทยาลัย พี่อเล็กซ์เลือกเรียนเอกอะไรครับ?

Alex Face: ตอนเข้าไปมหาวิทยาลัยช่วงปีแรกต้องเรียนพื้นฐานทุกอย่างก่อน เรียนจิตรกรรม ประติมากรรม ภาพพิมพ์ จิตรกรรมไทย แล้วค่อยเลือกเอกที่เราสนใจในปีที่ 3 เราเลยเลือกเรียนเอกภาพพิมพ์ เป็นพวกภาพพิมพ์โลหะ แกะไม้

S4S: And when you told your parents you wanted to study art, how did they react?

Alex Face: My parents weren’t too happy about it. Back in those days, people didn’t see art as a stable or secure career, so they didn’t really want me to pursue it. They suggested architecture instead, thinking it would still involve drawing. But to me, it just wasn’t the same. I wanted to study art. I wanted to draw.

S4S: So how did you convince them?

Alex Face: I decided to go all in and fight for it. I gathered information to show my parents how studying art could lead to further opportunities. At the time, the internet wasn’t even around, so I collected documents and guidance books to prove that studying at a vocational or technical college could eventually lead to a university degree, just like they had always hoped for me. They saw how determined and committed I was, so in the end, they agreed to let me study art.

S4S: Once you entered university, which major did you choose?

Alex Face: In the first year, everyone had to study the basics: painting, sculpture, printmaking, and traditional Thai painting before choosing a major in the third year. I chose printmaking, particularly metal prints and woodcuts.

S4S: อะไรเป็นเสน่ห์ของภาพพิมพ์ที่ทำให้พี่อเล็กซ์เลือกเรียน?

Alex Face: เรารู้สึกว่า ถ้าเรียนภาพพิมพ์ เป็นการเปิดโอกาสได้เรียนรู้เทคนิค วิธีการที่เราไม่เคยรู้ มีอุปกรณ์ต่าง ๆ ให้เราได้ทดลอง เช่น แท่นพิมพ์ขนาดใหญ่ ซึ่งการเรียนภาพพิมพ์ มันสร้างนิสัยบางอย่างให้เรา เช่น การวางแผนในการทำงาน เพราะงานภาพพิมพ์ ไม่ได้ทำแค่ 5 นาทีแล้วเสร็จ บางงานต้องทำเป็นอาทิตย์ หรือเป็นเดือน ต้องมีการวางแผน เรื่องการกลับค่าสีของงาน จากขาวเป็นดำ ดำเป็นขาว การกลับซ้ายเป็นขวา การพิมพ์ซ้ำไปเรื่อย ๆ จนกว่าจะได้ผลงานที่ดีที่สุดออกมา เหมือนกับการสอนให้เราประณีตในการทำงานมากขึ้น ซึ่งถ้าเราเลือกเรียนจิตรกรรมเราอาจจะไม่ได้เรียนการสร้างนิสัยแบบนี้มาก็ได้

ก้าวมาสู่โลกของกราฟฟิตี้ที่ไม่เคยรู้จัก สู่การเป็นศิลปินที่สะท้อนแนวคิดผ่านงานศิลปะ

ในช่วงปี 2000’s เป็นช่วงที่วัฒนธรรมฮิปฮอปจากต่างประเทศเริ่มเข้ามามีอิทธิพลทางบ้านเรามากขึ้น รวมไปถึงกราฟฟิตี้ที่เข้ามาพร้อมกัน ทำให้วัฒนธรรมนี้กระจายไปอย่างแพร่หลายในหมู่ของวัยรุ่นในตอนนั้น

S4S: What was it about printmaking that drew you in?

Alex Face: I felt that printmaking opened up new opportunities to learn techniques I had never known before, with different tools and equipment to explore, like large printing presses. Printmaking also taught me certain habits, like planning ahead. It’s not the kind of work you can finish in five minutes. Some pieces take weeks or even months. You have to plan for things like reversing colors, turning white into black, black into white, or flipping left to right. It’s about repeating the process until you achieve the best result. That discipline made me more meticulous in my work. If I had chosen painting, I might not have developed that mindset.

Stepping into the Unknown World of Graffiti and Becoming an Artist Who Reflects Ideas Through Art

In the 2000s, hip-hop culture from abroad began to heavily influence Thailand, and graffiti came along with it. The culture quickly spread among young people at the time.

S4S: จากที่เรียนภาพพิมพ์อยู่ ๆ ไปสนใจงานกราฟฟิตี้ได้ยังไงครับ?

Alex Face: ช่วงนั้นเราสนใจกราฟฟิตี้ที่เข้ามากับวัฒนธรรมฮิปฮอป เลยศึกษาดูงานตามเว็บไซต์ว่าต่างประเทศเขาทำกันยังไง ซึ่งตอนนั้นมันยังไม่ได้รู้จัก สตรีทอาร์ทเลยด้วยซ้ำ เราก็ไม่ได้คิดนะว่าจะพ่นจริงจังอะไร แต่ครั้งแรกที่เราซื้อสีไปสองกระป๋องแล้วไปพ่นบนกำแพง ทำให้เราเหมือนได้เจอโลกใหม่ มันสนุกมาก เจอเทคนิคในการทำงานรูปแบบใหม่แล้ว ซึ่งมันต่างจากภาพพิมพ์ที่เราเรียนอยู่ ที่กว่าจะได้ผลงานชิ้นหนึ่งใช้เวลานาน แต่กราฟฟิตี้มันแบบทำแค่แป๊บเดียวเสร็จ เหมือนเจอความสนุกที่ได้ทำนอกเหนือจากการเรียนที่ค่อนข้างจริงจัง หลังจากนั้นก็ไปหากำแพงพ่นสีกับเพื่อนที่ชอบพ่นเหมือนกัน ทำให้ได้ไปรู้จักนักพ่นคนใหม่ ๆ มากขึ้น

S4S: From studying printmaking, how did you end up getting into graffiti?

Alex Face: Back then, I got interested in graffiti because it came hand in hand with hip-hop culture. I started looking at websites to see how artists overseas were doing it. At that time, the term ‘street art’ wasn’t even widely known yet. I didn’t really think I would take spray painting seriously, but the first time I bought two cans of paint and sprayed a wall, it felt like I had discovered a whole new world. It was so much fun, like finding a brand-new technique to work with. Unlike printmaking, which takes a long time to complete one piece, graffiti can be done quickly. It gave me an outlet for fun outside of my formal studies, which were more intense and serious. After that, I kept looking for walls to spray with friends who shared the same interest, and through that, I got to know more and more graffiti writers.

Alex Face: พอเราเริ่มคิดถึงสตรีทอาร์ต เราเลยอยากหันมาทำงานที่ได้สื่อสารกับผู้คน เพราะด้วยนิสัยของการเรียนศิลปะ มักเป็นการตั้งคำถามอยู่แล้ว ซึ่งในตอนนั้นวงการศิลปะในตอนที่เราเรียนมันอาจจะแคบกว่าตอนนี้ เพราะเวลาเราจัด Exhibition ก็มีแต่เพื่อนเรามาดู เราอยากให้คนที่ไม่ใช่คนในวงการศิลปะได้มาดูเรามากกว่า เพราะฉะนั้นเราเลยเลือกที่จะทำงานสตรีทอาร์ต เพราะ “สตรีทอาร์ตสามารถเป็นเครื่องมือเพื่อสื่อสารกับผู้คน หรือเรียกร้องอะไรบางอย่างได้ผ่านผลงานที่เราทำ” ด้วยการที่ใช้งบประมาณน้อยกว่าการแสดงงานในพื้นที่ศิลปะอย่างแกลเลอรี่ ใช้วิธีการหาพื้นที่สาธารณะ คนเห็นงานเราได้ง่าย เราเลยรู้สึกว่า “สตรีทอาร์ต มันพิเศษสำหรับเรา”

From there, graffiti and fine art slowly began to merge, shaping the identity of ‘Alex Face’, an artist who wasn’t just spraying to leave his mark, but spraying to reflect ideas and communicate with people.

Alex Face: Once I started thinking about street art, I wanted to create works that could speak directly to people. Coming from an art background, you’re naturally trained to ask questions through your work. But at that time, the art scene felt smaller than it is today. Whenever we held an exhibition, it was mostly just our friends who came to see it. I wanted my art to reach beyond that circle, to people outside of the art world. That’s why I chose to do street art. Because “street art can be a tool to communicate with people, or even to raise awareness about certain issues through the work we create.” Compared to exhibiting in galleries, it required far less money and resources. By using public spaces, more people could easily see the work. That’s why I feel “street art is special to me.”

“If we create a piece of art but no one ever sees it or knows about it, isn’t that a shame?”

S4S: ยังจำผลงานแรกที่ทำให้คนรู้จักเราในฐานะ ‘Alex Face’ ได้อยู่ไหม

Alex Face: ตอนที่เราทำงานสตรีทอาร์ตช่วงแรก ๆ เราทดลองทำเทคนิคหลายอย่างเลย แล้วมีอยู่งานหนึ่งที่เรารู้สึกนึกสนุก เราทำสเตนซิลออกมาเป็นรูปจิ้งจก แล้วเอาไปพ่นเต็มกำแพงเลย หลังจากนั้นก็ได้ยินคนรู้จักพูดจิ้งจกบนกำแพงนี้ ซึ่งตอนนั้นยังไม่มีใครรู้ว่าเราเป็นคนทำ แต่มันทำให้รู้สึกว่า “ผลงานเรามันทำให้คนพูดถึงได้ด้วยวะ” แน่นอนถึงแม้ว่าฟีดแบคด้านที่ดีจะเยอะ แต่ในขณะเดียวกันก็มีคนที่ไม่ชอบผลงานเราด้วยเหมือนกัน

S4S: เราอยู่ในยุคที่มีเครื่องดิจิทัลให้เลือกใช้มากมาย เช่น AI อะไรคือเสน่ห์ของพู่กันที่ทำให้พี่อเล็กซ์ยังเลือกใช้อยู่?

Alex Face: ไม่รู้จะมีใครรู้สึกเหมือนเราไหมนะ ลึก ๆ แล้วเวลาเรามองภาพที่ทำจาก AI แม้มันจะสมจริงสวยงามแค่ไหนแต่เราก็ไม่รู้สึกเท่ากับสิ่งที่เราทำด้วยมืออยู่ดี ถ้าเทียบกับงานที่คนทำขึ้นมาจริง ๆ มันยังรู้สึกได้มากกว่า แต่เราก็ต้องมองหาประโยชน์จากมัน ซึ่งมีหลายอย่างที่น่าสนใจสำหรับเราเทคโนโลยีใช้เพื่อให้ชีวิตสะดวกมากขึ้น แต่ถ้าให้เลือกจริง ๆ เราก็ยังชอบวิธีการเดิม ๆ แบบการได้ยินเสียงของดินสอสัมผัสบนกระดาษ การผสมสีแล้วป้ายลงบนผ้าใบ และกลิ่นสีน้ำมัน

S4S: Do you still remember the first work that made people recognize you as ‘Alex Face’?

Alex Face: In the early days of doing street art, I experimented with a lot of different techniques. There was one piece I did just for fun. I made a stencil of a lizard and sprayed it all over a wall. After that, I started hearing people talk about “the lizard on the wall.” Nobody knew it was me at the time, but it made me realize “my work could actually get people talking.” Of course, there was plenty of positive feedback, but at the same time, there were also people who didn’t like it.

S4S: Now that we live in an era with so many digital tools, including AI, what makes you still choose to work with a brush?

Alex Face: I don’t know if anyone else feels the same, but for me, no matter how realistic or beautiful an AI-generated image looks, it just doesn’t feel the same as something made by hand. Compared to human-made work, it lacks that deeper feeling. That said, I do try to find the benefits of technology, and many aspects of it are useful. Tech makes life more convenient. But if I had to choose, I’d still go with the old ways, the sound of pencil on paper, mixing colors and spreading them on canvas, the smell of oil paint. That’s where the joy is for me.

วงการสตรีทอาร์ตในช่วง 20 ปีที่แล้ว มีแต่การตั้งคำถามว่าทำไปทำไม อะไรคือประโยชน์จากการพ่นกำแพงตามตึกร้าง ตรอกซอกซอย มีใครสั่งให้ทำหรือเปล่า ซึ่งแตกต่างกับยุคปัจจุบันมีคนที่เข้าใจในสตรีทอาร์ตมากขึ้น เข้าใจถึงวัตถุประสงค์ของงาน มีการใช้สตรีทอาร์ตในการสื่อสารมากขึ้น จนทำให้สตรีทอาร์ต กลายเป็นวิถีชีวิตที่เห็นได้ทั่วไปของคนสมัยนี้ไปแล้ว

S4S: พี่อเล็กซ์คิดว่า 20 ปีที่แล้วกับตอนนี้วงการสตรีทอาร์ตต่างกันมากไหม?

Alex Face: มาไกลกว่าที่เราคิดไว้เยอะมาก จากที่เราพ่นเล่นกับเพื่อนในตอนแรก ๆ กลายเป็นได้มีโอกาสได้ไปพ่นในเทศกาล สตรีทอาร์ทในหลากหลายประเทศ ได้เจอเพื่อน ผู้คนที่ชอบสตรีทอาร์ตเหมือนกัน อาจจะด้วยเวลาที่ผ่านไป หลายคนเติบโตมาพร้อมกับพบเห็นสตรีทอาร์ตมาตั้งแต่เด็ก ๆ รวมไปถึงชุมชนต่าง ๆ ที่นำสตรีทอาร์ตเข้ามาเป็นเครื่องมือในการพัฒนาเมือง ทำให้ชุมชนมีคนมาเดินเที่ยว ชาวบ้านก็มีรายได้ รวมถึงตอนนี้สตรีทอาร์ตถูกใช้ในเชิงการค้า ดูจากอีเวนต์ต่าง ๆ ที่เกิดขึ้น และงานแสดง Exhibition ที่มาจากศิลปินสตรีทอาร์ทที่เกิดแทบจะทุกสัปดาห์

S4S: แล้วคิดว่าอีก 10 ปี วงการสตรีทอาร์ตจะไปไหนทิศทางไหน ดีขึ้นไหม?

Alex Face: เรามองว่ามันคงปรับเปลี่ยนไปตามบริบทต่างๆของสังคม อาจจะอยู่ประมาณนี้เหมือนเดิม หรืออาจจะซาลง หรืออาจจะมีเต็มเมืองก็ได้

S4S: ในอนาคตมีวางแผนชีวิตยังไงไว้บ้างครับ?

Alex Face: ตอนนี้เราพยายามรักษาบาลานซ์ในชีวิตให้มากขึ้น เลือกโฟกัสทำในสิ่งที่อยาก ตอนวัยรุ่นเคยทำงานแบบหามรุ่งหามค่ำ ตอนนี้ก็เลือกที่จะไม่ทำแบบนั้นแล้ว พยายามพัฒนาผลงาน เอาความชอบกับเรื่องงานมารวมกันให้เยอะขึ้น อย่างเราชอบปั่นจักรยานไปในที่ใหม่ ๆ ก็เลยคิดโปรเจกต์ที่ทำให้เราได้ปั่นจักรยานแล้วทำงานศิลปะไปด้วยได้

Twenty years ago, street art was constantly questioned. Why do it? What’s the point of spraying on abandoned buildings or in alleyways? Who even asked for it? But today, more people understand street art and its purpose. It’s now widely used as a medium of communication, and it has become part of everyday life in our society.

S4S: Do you think the street art scene has changed a lot compared to 20 years ago?

Alex Face: It’s gone much further than I ever expected. From spraying just for fun with friends, it turned into opportunities to paint at street art festivals in different countries, and to meet people who share the same passion. Over time, people grew up seeing street art from a young age, and communities began adopting it as a tool for urban development. It brought visitors into neighborhoods, gave locals extra income. Nowadays, street art is even used commercially. Just look at the events happening everywhere and the exhibitions by street artists that are popping up almost every week.

S4S: Where do you see street art heading in the next 10 years?

Alex Face: I think it will adapt depending on the context of society. It might stay the same, it might fade out, or maybe it’ll cover the whole city. Anything is possible.

S4S: And what about your own life? How do you see your future?

Alex Face: Right now, I’m trying to keep my life more balanced and focus only on what I really want to do. When I was younger, I used to work day and night nonstop, but now I choose not to live like that anymore. I’m focusing on improving my work and blending it with the things I enjoy. For example, I love cycling to new places, so I came up with a project that lets me combine cycling with creating art along the way.

Krung Thep Creative Streets: Bringing Life to Bangkok Through Street Art and Strengthening Thai-European Connections

‘Krung Thep Creative Streets’ is a special project where Bangkok collaborated with the Embassies of Denmark and France in Thailand, blending street art with European culture. The project features murals by 15 street artists, bringing color and vibrancy to public spaces across the city to make Bangkok more livable.

S4S: ถามเรื่องชีวิตพี่อเล็กซ์กันมาเยอะแล้ว ขอถามเรื่องผลงานล่าสุดในโปรเจกต์ Krung Thep Creative Streets กันบ้าง มาร่วมในโปรเจกต์นี้ได้ยังไงครับ?

Alex Face: เราเคยร่วมงานกับทางสถานเอกอัครราชทูตฝรั่งเศสมาแล้วเมื่อปี 2019 ครั้งนี้เป็นอีกโปรเจกต์หนึ่งที่ได้มีโอกาสได้ร่วมงาน โดยใช้กำแพงเดิมที่เคยทำในครั้งที่แล้ว เพราะงานเก่าหลุดลอก ถือเป็นการอัพเดทงานชิ้นใหม่ในชุมชน

S4S: เล่าถึงคอนเซปต์งานในครั้งนี้หน่อยครับ

Alex Face: ถ้าติดตามสถานการณ์โลกตอนนี้มีแต่ข่าวการเกิดสงครามต่าง ๆ ในหลากหลายที่ทั่วโลกเรารู้สึกเศร้ากับความเจ็บปวดของเด็กๆ และผู้คนบริสุทธิ์ เลยอยากวาดดอกไม้ สื่อถึงความหวัง การเบ่งบานในช่วงเวลาที่เหมาะสม และโรยราตามกาลเวลา รอยแตกของกำแพงชีวิตยังหาทางไป รวมไปถึงผีเสื้อที่บินอยู่อาจสื่อถึงวงจรชีวิตอันแสนสั้น แต่ในขณะเดียวกันเราก็ต้องมีความหวัง

S4S: We’ve talked a lot about your life already, so let’s shift to your latest work in the Krung Thep Creative Streets project. How did you get involved?

Alex Face: I had worked with the French Embassy before back in 2019. This time, I was invited to join another project, using the same wall I painted on previously. Since the old work had started to peel off, this was an opportunity to update the mural and give something new to the community.

S4S: Can you tell us about the concept behind this piece?

Alex Face: If you follow the global situation right now, there’s constant news about wars happening in many places. I feel sad for the pain suffered by children and innocent people. That’s why I decided to paint flowers, to symbolize hope, blossoming at the right time, and eventually fading with the passage of time. The cracks in the wall reflect the struggles of life, but also show that there’s always a way forward. The butterflies in the piece may symbolize the short cycle of life, but at the same time, they remind us that we must keep hope alive.

S4S: แล้วผลงานชิ้นนี้ตั้งอยู่ที่ไหนครับ และจะตั้งอยู่ถึงเมื่อไหร่?

Alex Face: ผลงานอยู่ข้างตึก Marshall Livehouse, ซ.เจริญกรุง 36 (ตรงข้ามกับสถานเอกอัครราชทูตฝรั่งเศส) เลยครับ ผลงานชิ้นนี้สามารถมาชมได้เรื่อย ๆ เลยครับ

S4S: ความยากในการทำงานที่สเกลใหญ่แบบนี้ คืออะไร

Alex Face: ความยากสำหรับเรา ด่านแรก คือการเอาอุปกรณ์อย่างพวกรถกระเช้าเข้าพื้นที่ แล้วแต่พื้นที่ที่เราเข้าไปทำด้วยว่าเอื้ออำนวยแค่ไหน มีอุปสรรคอย่างเช่นสายไฟฟ้า ต่อมาคืออุปสรรคต่าง ๆ ที่ไม่สามารถควบคุมได้ เช่น สภาพอากาศ ที่ร้อน และฝน กับเรื่องเวลาที่ค่อนข้างจำกัด

S4S: แล้วแบบนี้มีการวางแผนขั้นตอนในการทำงานยังไงบ้างครับ?

Alex Face: เริ่มจากสเก็ตภาพก่อน แล้วมาดูพื้นที่จริง คิดถึงระยะหวังผลการมองเห็นว่า มองไกลเป็นแบบไหน มองใกล้เป็นแบบไหน เสร็จแล้วก็นำภาพที่เราสเก็ตไว้ ไปร่างบนกำแพงวางตำแหน่งให้ถูกต้องโดยอิงจากแบบ เพราะเวลาขึ้นไปทำงานข้างบนกำแพงในระยะใกล้ มันจะดูยากไม่รู้ว่าสเกลมันประมาณไหน ต้องอาศัยการขึ้นลงเพื่อตรวจสอบดูความถูกต้อง พอมันเป็นการทำงานสเกลใหญ่การเคลื่อนตัวขึ้นลงแต่ละครั้งใช้เวลา เพราะฉะนั้น เราต้องวางแผนให้ดี พยายามผิดพลาดให้น้อยที่สุดเพื่อประหยัดอุปกรณ์และเวลา

นอกจากมี Alex Face เป็นหนึ่งในศิลปินในโปรเจกต์ Krung Thep Creative Streets แล้ว ยังมีศิลปินอีก 14 ชีวิตที่มาสร้างสีสันให้กับพื้นที่ทั่วกรุงเทพฯ ผ่านคอนเซปต์ต่าง ๆ ที่บอกเล่าเรื่องราวในแบบฉบับของพวกเขา

Alex Face: มีศิลปินจากต่างประเทศที่น่าสนใจหลายคน ซึ่งจะอยู่ในย่านเจริญกรุง – ตลาดน้อย เลยครับ แต่ที่แนะนำใกล้ ๆ ก็จะมีผลงานของ Seb Toussaint ศิลปินชาวฝรั่งเศส เป็นศิลปินที่มีส่วนร่วมกับชุมชนต่าง ๆ อยู่บ่อยครั้ง Romain กับ Olivier จากฝรั่งเศส ศิลปินไทยก็อีกหลายคนสามารถดูในแมพของโปรเจกต์ Krung Thep Creative Streets ได้เลยครับ

S4S: And where can people find this mural, and how long will it be there?

Alex Face: The work is on the wall next to Marshall Livehouse, in Soi Charoen Krung 36, right across from the French Embassy. People are welcome to come and see it anytime.

S4S: What’s the biggest challenge in creating work on such a large scale?

Alex Face: For me, the first hurdle is getting equipment like the boom lift into the area. It depends on how accessible the space is, and sometimes there are obstacles like power lines. Then there are factors you can’t control, like the weather, the heat and the rain, plus the fact that the working time is often quite limited.

S4S: So, how do you plan your process when working on something this big?

Alex Face: I start by sketching the concept, then I visit the site and think about visibility, what it looks like from far away versus up close. After that, I transfer the sketch onto the wall, carefully placing each element according to the design. When you’re up close to the wall, it’s hard to judge the scale, so you need to go up and down to check and make adjustments. On large-scale projects, even moving up and down once takes time, so planning well is crucial. I try to minimize mistakes as much as possible to save both equipment and time.

In addition to Alex Face, Krung Thep Creative Streets features 14 other artists who each bring their own concepts and stories to different parts of Bangkok, adding color and energy to the city.

S4S: Apart from your own work, are there any other artists you’d recommend people check out?

Alex Face: There are many interesting international artists, especially in the Charoen Krung-Talad Noi area. Nearby, I’d recommend checking out Seb Toussaint, a French artist who often works closely with local communities. There are also Romain and Olivier, both from France. And of course, there are many Thai artists too. You can see all their locations on the Krung Thep Creative Streets project map.

S4S: ฝากอะไรถึงน้อง ๆ รุ่นใหม่ที่อยากเป็นศิลปินหน่อยครับ

Alex Face: ถ้าอยากเป็นศิลปิน ก็ต้องมีวินัย ฝึกฝนวิธีคิด และทักษะ ถ่ายทอดสิ่งที่เรารู้สึกมันออกมาตามที่ตัวเองถนัด แต่สุดท้ายไม่ว่าอยากจะทำอะไรก็ตามต้องมีความจริงจัง มีลูกบ้า ความต่อเนื่อง ให้มองถึงความสุขระหว่างที่ได้ทำ เพราะตอนที่ได้อินกับอะไรที่ชอบ เราจะสามารถทำมันได้อย่างดี

“ถ้าเรามีความสุขกับสิ่งที่ทำ เราจะทำมันได้ตลอดโดยที่ไม่มีข้อแม้”

S4S: Lastly, what advice would you give to young people who want to become artists?

Alex Face: If you want to be an artist, you need discipline. Train your way of thinking, develop your skills, and express your feelings in the medium that suits you best. But no matter what you want to do, you have to be serious about it, have a bit of madness, and keep at it consistently. Most importantly, focus on the joy you get from the process. When you’re deeply into something you love, that’s when you’ll be able to do it well.

“If we’re happy with what we do, we’ll be able to keep doing it endlessly, without conditions.”

Melody Mansion คือแบรนด์ลำโพงคัสตอมของคนไทย ประกอบไปด้วยสมาชิก 2 คน ได้แก่ “ฮัท-รรัชต์ วัชระพิสุธิ์” และ “ท็อป-มนตรี พันธ์เลิศ” ทั้งสองคนเป็นเพื่อนกันตั้งแต่สมัยเรียนมหาวิทยาลัย หลังจากเรียนจบทั้งสองได้แยกย้ายไปตามเส้นทางของตนเอง จากเส้นขนานของเพื่อนซี้ต่างเส้นทางอาชีพ แต่สุดท้ายพวกเขากลับมาบรรจบกันอีกครั้ง เพราะความชื่นชอบใน “เสียงดนตรี”

ฮัท-รรัชต์ หรือที่รู้จักกันในนาม RIOT HUNT ดีเจที่ถนัดแนวเพลง Old School Hip-Hop และดีไซน์เนอร์ที่เคยทำแบรนด์อย่าง Holyriot (ปัจจุบัน Melody Mansion ทำเสื้อผ้าด้วย) ส่วนทางด้าน ท็อป-มนตรี มีอาชีพเป็น หมองู อยู่ที่สวนงู สถานเสาวภา สภากาชาดไทย ตำแหน่งคือเจ้าหน้าที่รีดพิษงู ที่ทำได้ทั้งการรักษา เลี้ยง หรือแม้กระทั่งโชว์งู ซึ่งเป็นอาชีพที่ดูคอนทราสต์กับการเป็นคนทำลำโพงเป็นอย่างมาก

Melody Mansion is a Thai custom speaker brand founded by two members: “Hunt – Rarath Wacharapisudhi” and “Top – Montree Punloet.” The two have been friends since their university days. After graduation, each went their separate way, following different career paths. Yet, like parallel lines of close friends on different journeys, they eventually crossed paths again because of a shared passion: the love of music.

Hunt, also known as “RIOT HUNT,” is a DJ specializing in Old School Hip-Hop and a designer who once ran the brand Holyriot (today, Melody Mansion also produces clothing). Top, on the other hand, works as a snake handler at the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute, Thai Red Cross Society. His role involves venom extraction, caring for snakes, and even performing live snake shows, which seems worlds apart from the craft of building speakers.

พี่ฮัทเริ่มต้นทำงานกับ Bigdel ศิลปินกราฟิตี้ยุคบุกเบิกในประเทศไทย ซึ่งออฟฟิศของพี่เดลตั้งอยู่ที่ชั้น 3 ของบาร์ย่าน RCA ที่มีชื่อว่า ThaBeatlounge “ตอนแรกผมไม่รู้เลยว่าที่นี่เป็นร้านที่รวบรวม DJ / Rapper ระดับท็อปของไทย เป็นเหมือนศูนย์กลางของคอมมูนิตี้ Hip-hop ในไทย ซึ่งเวลาเรากำลังขึ้นไปทำงาน เราจะได้ยินเสียงเพลงฮิปฮอปที่เราไม่เคยรู้จัก แต่กลับหลงใหลในดนตรีแบบนี้ขึ้นมา”

ทำงานที่นั่นประมาณ 2 ปี พี่ฮัทก็เริ่มรู้จักคนที่ The Beatlounge ไปโดยปริยาย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเหล่า DJ อย่างพี่กบ whatdatfrog / พี่เต้ TNT จนมีคืนหนึ่งที่ได้ไปเที่ยวด้วยกัน และกลับมาจบที่ ThaBeatlounge “พี่กบก็เริ่มเซตเครื่อง เริ่ม Scratch แผ่น แล้วก็ชวนให้ผมไปลองจับ ลองเล่น ซึ่งผมจับอยู่แค่ไม่กี่นาทีเพราะกลัวของเขาพัง เราก็รู้สึกว่าสิ่งนี้มันพิเศษ เสียงมันดึงดูดเราจัง เราเริ่มสนในการเป็นดีเจ” แต่เรื่องราวทั้งหมดก็ผ่านไปโดยที่ยังไม่มีอะไรเกิดขึ้น

หลังจากนั้นสักพัก ThaBeatlounge ก็ปิดตัวลง ทุกคนก็แยกย้ายกันไป ซึ่งระหว่างนั้นพี่ฮัทที่ทำเสื้อผ้าของตัวเองอยู่แล้ว มีโอกาสนำเสื้อผ้าที่ตัวเองทำเข้าไปขายในร้าน Sell The Souls (ร้านเดิมตั้งอยู่ที่เอกมัย) และได้เจอกับความชอบที่ตัวเองเคยกลบมันไว้ “มันมีอีเวนต์หนึ่งของร้านที่ให้เพื่อน ๆ เจ้าของแบรนด์มาเปิดเพลง ผมเลยได้กลับมาเปิดเพลงอีกครั้ง จำได้ว่าวันนั้นเรามีความสุขมากที่ได้กลับมาเปิดเพลง เราเลยเริ่มสนใจการเป็น DJ อีกครั้ง”

Hunt began his career working with “BIGDEL”, one of Thailand’s graffiti pioneers. BIGDEL’s office was located on the third floor of a bar in RCA called ThaBeatlounge. “At first, I had no idea that this place was home to top DJs and rappers in Thailand, a central hub for the country’s hip-hop community. Every time I went upstairs to work, I’d hear hip-hop tracks I’d never known before, and I found myself falling in love with the music.”

After about two years working there, Hunt gradually became familiar with people at ThaBeatlounge, including DJs like “whatdatfrog” and “TNT.” One night while hanging out together, they ended up back at ThaBeatlounge. “Whatdatfrog started setting up his gear, scratching records, and invited me to try. I only touched it for a few minutes because I was afraid I’d break something, but I felt there was something special about it. The sound really drew me in. That’s when I first became curious about being a DJ.” Still, nothing concrete came of it at that time.

Not long after, ThaBeatlounge closed down and everyone went their separate ways. Around that time, Hunt, who was already making his own clothing, had the opportunity to sell his pieces at Sell The Souls (formerly located in Ekkamai). There, he rediscovered a passion he had once pushed aside. “There was an event where brand owners were invited to play music. I got to DJ again, and I still remember how happy I was that day. It made me start getting interested in DJing again.”

ระหว่างที่อยู่ Sell The Souls พี่ฮัทก็เริ่มจริงจังมากขึ้น เริ่มซื้อแผ่นเสียง เครื่องเล่น ซึมซับความรู้ ไลฟ์สไตล์ต่าง ๆ จากที่นี่ “ผมเริ่มรู้จักอะไรจริง ๆ หรือเข้าใจสิ่งที่ทำ มันเริ่มต้นจาก Sell The Souls เลยครับ ทำให้เรารู้จักตัวเองมากขึ้น” ซึ่งที่ตั้งของร้านย่านเอกมัย ชั้นบนจะมีไวนิลบาร์ชื่อว่า Strange Fruit กลายเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นที่ได้รู้จักกับพี่ออฟ DJ Aopsher

“พี่ออฟเดินผ่านร้านเราทุกวัน มีวันนึงพี่แกเห็นผมเปิดเพลงอยู่ เลยเปิดประตูเข้ามาถามว่า ‘เฮ้ย เปิดเพลงเป็นเหรอ’ ผมก็ตอบไปว่า ‘พอได้ครับ’ พี่ออฟก็ถามต่อว่า ‘พอได้คืออะไร ถามว่าเป็นหรือไม่เป็น’ ผมเลยตอบไปว่าไม่เป็นครับ พี่ออฟก็เรียกให้ผมตามแกขึ้นไปบน Strange Fruit พอขึ้นไปผมได้เห็น Turntable จริง ๆ Mixer แบบที่ไม่เคยเห็นมาก่อน หลังจากนั้นผมก็เริ่มทำงานกับพี่ออฟมาเรื่อย ๆ”

“ระหว่างนั้นผมก็ได้รู้จักกับ Masaji และ DJ TO-RU ตอนแรกผมก็ไม่กล้าคุยเพราะเขาเป็นรุ่นใหญ่ แต่โทรุก็มา Scratch เล่นกับผมหน้า Sell The Souls ซึ่งตอนนั้นผมก็เล่นมั่วเลย ยังไม่มีความรู้เท่าไหร่ หลังจากนั้นโทรุก็ชวนผมไปเรียนดีเจกับเขา โดยที่ไม่คิดเงินเลยครับ” การที่พี่ฮัทได้เรียน DJ กับทั้งสองอาจารย์ซึ่งเปรียบเสมือน หยินหยาง ที่แตกต่างกันสุดขั้ว ทำให้สามารถหยิบจับความรู้จากทั้งสองสไตล์ มาปรับเป็นตัวของตัวเองได้อย่างลงตัว

“ฝั่งโทรุจะสอนเรื่องคัลเจอร์ วิธีการใช้ วิธีการเล่นเป็นหลัก ฝั่งพี่ออฟจะสอนเรื่องวิธีการทำงานจริง ว่าคนเขาฟังเพลงอะไร ตัวตนเราประมาณไหน ใส่ลงไปในการเปิดแค่ไหน ผมก็พยายามเบลนด์ทั้งสองฝั่งเข้าด้วยกัน ซึ่งมันสนุกมาก ๆ” ทั้งหมดคือเรื่องราวคร่าว ๆ ก่อนจะมาเป็น DJ RIOT HUNT อย่างทุกวันนี้

While spending time at Sell The Souls, Hunt became more serious about it. He started buying vinyl records and equipment, absorbing knowledge and lifestyle influences from that environment. “I really began to understand what I was doing and what it meant. It all started at Sell The Souls. That’s where I began to know myself better.” Located in Ekkamai, the shop also had a vinyl bar upstairs called Strange Fruit, which became the place where Hunt first met “DJ Aopsher.”

“One day, Aopsher would pass by the shop as usual, but this time he saw me DJing. He walked in and asked, ‘Hey, you know how to DJ?’ I said, ‘Sort of.’ He shot back, ‘What do you mean sort of? Either you can or you can’t.’ So I admitted, ‘I can’t.’ Aopsher then told me to follow him upstairs to Strange Fruit. That was when I saw a real turntable and mixer for the first time. After that, I started working with Aopsher more and more.”

“During that time, I also got to know Masaji and DJ TO-RU. At first, I didn’t dare to approach them because they were seniors. But TO-RU came and scratched with me right in front of Sell The Souls. I was just messing around back then, I didn’t really know much. Later, TO-RU invited me to learn DJing with him, and he never charged me a thing.” Learning from both mentors, who were like yin and yang with completely opposite styles, gave Hunt the chance to absorb knowledge from both sides and shape his own unique identity.

“From TO-RU’s side, the lessons were about culture, how to use the equipment, and how to actually play. From Aopsher’s side, it was more about the practical side of DJing: what people want to hear, how to express who you are, and how much of yourself to put into a set. I tried blending both approaches together, and it was incredibly fun.” That was the rough journey before becoming the DJ now known as “RIOT HUNT.”

ในฝั่งของพี่ท็อปตั้งแต่เรียนจบก็แยกไปอีกเส้นทางหนึ่ง นั่นคืออาชีพ หมองู ซึ่งจุดเริ่มต้นมาจากการที่พี่ชายทำอาชีพนี้อยู่แล้ว จึงได้ไปทำงานกับพี่ชาย หลังจากทำงานนี้ประมาณ 7-8 ปี พี่ท็อปได้เริ่มอีกหนึ่งงานคือการขาย เครื่องเสียงวินเทจ เช่น เทปรีล (Reel-to-reel tape) / Turntable / ลำโพง

แต่จุดเริ่มต้นการทำลำโพงของ Melody Mansion มาจากเหตุการณ์ที่พี่ฮัทไปเปิดเพลงที่บาร์แห่งหนึ่ง โดยเปิดเพลงแนวฮิปฮอปตามสไตล์ของตนเอง ซึ่งทางร้านใช้ลำโพงวินเทจในการกระจายเสียง และลำโพงบางตัวไม่สามารถรองรับย่านเสียงของเพลงแนวนี้ได้ในทางเทคนิค เกิดเป็นข้อสงสัยและได้มาปรึกษากับพี่ท็อป คุยไปคุยมากลายเป็นข้อสรุปที่ว่า

ถ้างั้นเราก็เริ่มทำลำโพงเองก็ได้ เพื่อทำให้ลำโพงทรงวินเทจสามารถเปิดเพลงฮิปฮอปได้

As for Top, from the moment he graduated, he took a completely different path, becoming a snake handler. It all started because his older brother was already working in the field, so Top joined him. After working in the profession for about seven to eight years, Top started another pursuit: selling vintage audio equipment such as reel-to-reel tapes, turntables, and speakers.

The starting point of Melody Mansion’s speaker-making came from an event where Hunt was DJing at a bar, playing hip-hop in his own style. The venue used vintage speakers for sound, but some of them could not technically handle that genre or frequency range. This sparked a question that led to discussions between the two, and eventually a mutual decision:

So why not create speakers ourselves, vintage in form but designed to deliver hip-hop the way it should be heard.

“ผมเริ่มหาความรู้เพิ่มเติม เริ่มซื้อลำโพงทั่วไป หรือลำโพงที่ชนะประกวด มาแต่งเพิ่มเติม มาทำลำโพงในทรงที่คนอื่นเขาไม่ทำกัน โดยฝั่งออกแบบจะเป็นพี่ฮัท ส่วนผมเป็นคนคิดสูตรตู้เพื่อลำโพงรองรับย่านเสียงที่เราต้องการ” ซึ่งสกิลการทำลำโพงของพี่ท็อปนั้น มาจากการขายลำโพงวินเทจอย่างเดียวเลย ไม่เคยไปเรียนเพิ่มที่อื่น เพราะการที่จะขายได้บางทีต้องซ่อมของเป็น

การบาลานซ์สองอาชีพที่แตกต่างกันสุดขั้วคงไม่ใช่เรื่องง่ายใช่ไหมล่ะทุกคน แต่พี่ท็อปก็บอกว่า “คิดว่าอาชีพสวนงูเป็นอาชีพหลัก เพื่อรองรับการทำลำโพงได้โดยไม่ต้องกังวลว่าแบรนด์จะขายได้หรือไม่ แต่ตอนนี้งานลำโพงก็เริ่มจะแซงอาชีพหลักละ ฮ่าๆๆๆ กลางวันทำงานประจำ เลิกงานมาใช้เวลากับครอบครัว ก่อนที่ช่วงค่ำถึงดึกจะมาทำลำโพงต่อ รูทีนประมาณนี้ทุกวันครับ”

หลายคนคงได้ยินวลี อย่าทำงานกับเพื่อน กันมามากมายแล้ว ไม่ว่าจะด้วยเหตุผลอะไรก็ตาม ซึ่งพี่ฮัทก็บอกว่า “ทำยังไงก็ได้ให้ชีวิตนี้ไม่ต้องทำงานกับท็อป เราเป็นเพื่อนกันที่ไม่ได้ทำงานในแวดวงเดียวกันเลย แต่สุดท้ายเราทั้งคู่ก็ได้มาบรรจบกันหลังจากผ่านไปหลายปี ย้อนความนิดนึงว่าสถานที่ที่เราถ่ายทำกันวันนี้ (โกดังของพ่อพี่ท็อป) ผมได้อะไรหลายอย่างจากที่นี่มาก แผ่นเสียงของพ่อท็อปที่เคยอยู่ที่นี่ ตอนนี้อยู่บ้านผมเกินครึ่งแล้ว ฮ่าๆๆ”

จากวันที่ไปเล่นที่บาร์แห่งนั้น จุดประกายไอเดียที่ต้องการ แต่งตัว ให้ลำโพงในสไตล์ของตนเอง จึงเกิดเป็นบทสนทนาระหว่างเพื่อนซี้ได้ริเริ่มทำสิ่งใหม่ และกลายเป็น Melody Mansion ในที่สุด “พอได้เริ่มทำแล้วผม (ฮัท) สนุกมากเลยครับ เราเริ่มจากไม่มีความรู้อะไรเลย แค่ทำในสิ่งที่เราอยากได้ จนเริ่มพัฒนามาเรื่อย ๆ ตอนนี้ยังพูดได้ไม่เต็มปากว่าลำโพงของเราดีแล้ว พวกเรายังต้องพัฒนาอีกครับ แต่แค่ฟังแล้วมันตอบสนองเรา ผมก็โอเคแล้ว”

“I started learning more by experimenting, buying regular speakers or modifying them, making cabinets in designs that no one else was doing. Hunt took charge of the creative design, while I worked on the technical side, calculating cabinet formulas to achieve the sound ranges we were after.” Top’s ability to build speakers didn’t come from formal training. It came solely from his time selling vintage audio, since in order to sell them, he often had to repair them himself.

Balancing two completely opposite professions is not an easy task. Still, Top shared, “I see the snake farm as my primary career, which gives me the stability to work on speakers without worrying too much about sales. But lately, the speaker work has started to overtake my main job, hahaha. I work my day job, spend time with my family after, and then from evening until late at night, I focus on making speakers. That’s what every day looks like for me.”

Many people have probably heard the saying, “Never work with friends,” for all sorts of reasons. Hunt admitted, “I used to think, whatever happens, I don’t want to end up working with Top. We were friends, but never in the same circle of work. But in the end, after many years, our paths crossed again. To look back a little, the place we’re filming today is Top’s father’s warehouse. I gained a lot from this place. In fact, more than half of his father’s vinyl collection that was here has now moved to my house, hahaha.”

It was that night at the bar that sparked the idea of styling speakers in their own way. That conversation between two best friends led to the start of something new and eventually became Melody Mansion. “Once we started, I had so much fun,” said Hunt. “We began with no knowledge at all, just making what we wanted. Step by step, it kept developing. Even now, I wouldn’t say our speakers are the best. There is still more to improve. But as long as they sound right to us, that is good enough.”

“ผมเป็นคนดีไซน์ที่ไม่รู้จักลำโพง ไม่รู้ว่ามันทำงานยังไง งั้นผมดีไซน์ตามที่ตัวเองอยากได้เลย แต่ท็อปสามารถทำออกมาได้จริง แล้วก็มีพี่อีกคนหนึ่งที่ช่วยเรามาตลอดคือ พี่ฟาร์ม ขึ้นแบบลำโพงแบบ 3D ให้เลย ตอนแรกเราแค่ทำเล่น ๆ เองครับ” จากลำโพงคัสตอมที่ทำเพื่อเปิดเพลงเองในปาร์ตี้ของกลุ่มเพื่อน ซัปพอร์ตกันเองในคอมมูนิตี้ แต่พอมีคนเห็นมากขึ้น เริ่มมีคนสนใจ จนกลายเป็นลูกค้าของแบรนด์

Melody Mansion ไม่ใช่แค่แบรนด์ลำโพง แต่เป็นเหมือนแมนชันในฝันของผม

“Melody Mansion เหมือนกับแมนชันที่แต่ละชั้นมีคนที่เกี่ยวข้องกับดนตรีอยู่ ชั้นของผม (ฮัท) ก็เป็นดีเจ นักออกแบบลำโพง ชั้นของท็อปก็คือนักทำลำโพง นอกจากนี้ยังมีชั้นของแรปเปอร์ รุ่นน้องผม เช่น Buddha Flow ผมก็อยากให้ทุกคนอยู่ในแมนชันนี้” Melody Mansion จึงไม่ใช่แค่แบรนด์คัสตอมลำโพง แต่เป็นคอมมูนิตี้ของคนที่รักในเสียงเพลง

“I’m a designer who didn’t know anything about speakers or how they worked. So I just designed them the way I wanted, and Top made them a reality. Another person who has always helped us is Farm, who created 3D models of the speakers for us. At the beginning, we were just doing it for fun.” From custom speakers made only for their own parties and to support friends in the community, people started noticing them, and interest grew until those people became real customers.

Melody Mansion is not just a speaker brand. For me, it feels like a dream mansion.

“Melody Mansion is like a mansion where each floor is filled with people connected to music. My floor is for me as a DJ and speaker designer. Top’s floor is for him as a speaker builder. There are also floors for rappers, like my younger friend Buddha Flow. I want everyone to be part of this mansion.” Melody Mansion is therefore not just a custom speaker brand, but a community of people who love music.

การทำอะไรที่ไม่เหมือนใคร คนอื่นจะเห็นเราได้ชัดกว่า

เข้าสู่พาร์ทดีไซน์ลำโพง พี่ฮัทยอมรับว่าช่วงแรกดูเรฟจากที่อื่นมากมาย แต่พอเห็นก็รู้เลยว่าถ้ายังทำตามเรฟก็จะไม่มีอะไรใหม่ที่เกิดขึ้นจากพวกเขาเอง ด้วยมายเซตที่วางไว้แต่แรกว่าทำแค่สนุก ๆ ไม่ได้ต้องการทำแบรนด์ไปแข่งกับใคร Melody Mansion จึงเป็นลำโพงที่เอาแต่ใจคนออกแบบ แต่ออกมาโดดเด่นไม่มีเหมือนใคร และเข้าตากลุ่มคนที่ชอบในเสียงเพลงเช่นเดียวกัน

“ท็อปเลิกงานมาต้องมานั่งทำลำโพงต่อถึงตี 3 ถ้าสุดท้ายเราทำในสิ่งที่มันมีอยู่แล้ว ผมว่ามันก็ไม่คุ้มกับเวลาที่เสียไป บางคนอาจจะมองว่าเราดื้อ มองว่าเราทำผิด แต่สำหรับผมมันอาจจะถูกก็ได้ บางคนมองว่ามันไม่ดี เราก็ไม่เถียง เพราะทุกอย่างที่เราทำมันยังพัฒนาได้อีก แต่แค่ความสุขที่ได้ทำโดยที่ไม่มีกรอบอะไรเลย มันคุ้มค่ามากครับ”

Melody Mansion คือลำโพงคัสตอมทำมือแบบ 1 ต่อ 1 มีชิ้นเดียวในโลกเท่านั้น ซึ่งพี่ท็อปเล่าว่าช่วงแรกที่ทำ ถ้าลูกค้าอยากได้แบบไหนจัดให้ได้หมด แต่บางทีเกินขอบเขตที่ทั้งคู่วางไว้ หลัง ๆ เลยมีเหมือนเมนูไว้ให้ลูกค้าเลือกว่าอยากใช้อะไหล่แบบไหนในส่วนไหน เลือกจากที่มีมาประกอบเป็นลำโพง ทำให้ลำโพงยังคงคาแรกเตอร์ของแบรนด์ และลูกค้าได้เลือกคัสตอมตามใจแบบที่อยากได้จริง ๆ ถือว่าวิน วินกันทั้งคู่

“สิ่งสำคัญของผม (ท็อป) คืออยากทำให้ได้ตรงตามใจลูกค้าที่สุดครับ เวลาพี่ฮัทดีไซน์มามันฉีกทุกกฎของลำโพงอยู่แล้วครับ ฮ่าๆๆๆ ผมก็ต้องหาวิธีที่ทำมันออกมาได้จริง ล่าสุดมีลูกค้าให้ทำลำโพงจากไมโครเวฟ หรือจะทำเสื้อลำโพง มันก็กลายเป็นฝันร้ายของผมครับ (ตรงนี้ล้อเล่นนะ) แต่รับลูกค้าทุกรูปแบบ จ้างได้ครับ”

“พอเราไม่มีความกลัวว่าใครจะว่าเรา ว่าลำโพงเสียงดีหรือไม่ดี ซึ่งอนาคตเราต้องพัฒนาตรงจุดนี้อยู่แล้ว แต่พอมันไม่มีกรอบ เราสนุกในการทำสิ่งนี้มากเลยครับ แล้วเราก็รู้สึกว่าลูกค้าแฮปปี้กับการได้เลือกลำโพงในแบบของตัวเอง หลายคนไม่ใช่แค่เพียงลูกค้าธรรมดา แต่กลายเป็นเพื่อนที่ยังติดต่อกันจนถึงทุกวันนี้เลยครับ”

Doing something no one else is doing makes you easier to be seen.

Moving into the design aspect, Hunt admitted that in the beginning, he looked at a lot of references from elsewhere. But he quickly realized that if they kept following those references, nothing truly new would ever come from them. From the start, their mindset was simply to have fun, not to compete with anyone. Melody Mansion became speakers designed entirely to satisfy the creator’s vision, yet they turned out striking, unique, and appealing to people who also love music.

“Top works his day job and then stays up building speakers until three in the morning. If, in the end, we were just making something that already existed, I don’t think it would be worth the time. Some people might think we’re stubborn or say we’re doing it wrong, but to me it could also be right. Some may feel it’s not good, and we won’t argue with that, because everything we do can always be improved. But the joy of creating without any boundaries makes it all worth it.”

Melody Mansion creates handmade custom speakers, one by one, each piece unique in the world. Top explained that in the early days, if a customer wanted something, they would do anything to make it happen. But sometimes requests went beyond the limits they had set for themselves. Later, they introduced a sort of menu for customers to choose which parts they wanted in different sections. That way, the speakers still carried the brand’s character while giving customers the freedom to customize in their own way. It was a win-win for both sides.

“The most important thing for me is to make speakers that truly match the customer’s wishes,” said Top. “Hunt’s designs always break every rule of speaker-making, hahaha. So I have to figure out how to actually bring them to life. Recently, a customer even asked me to build a speaker from a microwave or even make a wearable speaker. Those became nightmares for me (just kidding), but we take on all types of projects. We’re open for hire.”

“When we stop worrying about whether people will say our speakers sound good or not, we can really enjoy the process. Of course, in the future, we need to keep improving on that point. But without those boundaries, we find joy in what we do. And we also feel that our customers are happy because they get to choose a speaker in their own style. Many of them have become more than customers. They have turned into friends we still keep in touch with today.”

What began as making speakers for themselves later turned into making them for friends and acquaintances, spreading purely by word of mouth without any promotion. Now, at about one year old, Melody Mansion has started attracting more outside customers, such as cafés, bars, and even private homes. It is no longer just about building speakers, but also about setting up full sound systems for those places.

Top : ส่วนตัวผมคือทำให้มันดีที่สุดครับ ทำให้เป็นอาชีพหลักได้จริง ๆ สามารถเลี้ยงดูครอบครัวของผมได้ เพราะผมวางแผนกับพี่ฮัทว่า ไม่เกิน 10 ปีจะเลิกทำละ ฮ่าๆๆ คือเลิกทำเองแต่เป็นการเซตระบบให้คนอื่นทำต่อได้ เป็นบริษัทที่ใหญ่ขึ้น

Hut : 10 ปีที่พูดคือเผื่อเวลาไว้เยอะ ๆ นะครับ ฮ่า ส่วนตัวผมอยากให้เราเป็นแบรนด์ลำโพงไทยที่ส่งออกต่างประเทศได้ครับ

S4S: What do you both see for Melody Mansion in the future?

Top: For me, it’s about making this the best it can be, turning it into a true full-time career that can support my family. I’ve already planned with Hunt that within ten years I’ll stop, hahaha. Not stop the brand, but step back myself while setting up a system for others to carry it on, growing into a bigger company.

Hunt: When I said ten years, that was more like giving ourselves a long runway, hahaha. Personally, I want us to become a Thai speaker brand that can be exported overseas.

From close friends who went their separate ways after graduation, fate brought them back together through a shared love for “music” that never faded from their hearts. Melody Mansion has become a speaker brand that expresses their identity, blending rebellious ideas with bold design and the joy of creating something truly unique. Another highlight of the brand is its commitment to using as many Thai components as possible. While they admit that in some cases imported parts still perform better, their priority is to support Made in Thailand materials and prove that Thai craftsmanship is just as good as anywhere else.

S4S: จุดเริ่มต้นที่เริ่มมาชื่นชอบเพลงเมทัล เริ่มตั้งแต่ตอนไหนครับ

Jino: ตั้งแต่มัธยมต้นครับ เราเริ่มฟัง Slipknot ตั้งแต่ตอนนั้น ในสมัยนั้นเพื่อนเรายังไม่ค่อยมีใครฟังเพลงแนวนี้ เราเลยเริ่มค้นหาข้อมูล เริ่มฟังไปเรื่อย ๆ ได้รู้จักวงอื่น ๆ จนเราไปงานอันเดอร์กราวด์ด้วยตัวคนเดียว ทำให้ได้รู้จักเพื่อนในวงการนี้มากมายครับ

S4S: แล้ว Slipknot คือวงแรกที่พาเข้าวงการเพลงเมทัลเลยไหม

Jino: ใช่ครับ Slipknot เป็นวงแรกที่เราฟัง และทำให้เราได้เข้าสู่วงการเพลงเมทัลครับ

Jino is the founder of Slamman Booking Asia, Slamman Crew, and Slam Rap. He’s also the vocalist of the bands Pathological Sadism and Encephalitis.

From Metal Legend to Underground Icon: How It All Began

S4S: When did you first get into metal music?

Jino: It started back in middle school. I began listening to Slipknot around that time. Not many of my friends were into that kind of music yet, so I started digging deeper, exploring more bands on my own. Eventually, I even went to underground shows by myself. That’s how I got to know so many people in the scene.

S4S: So was Slipknot the first band that introduced you to metal?

Jino: Yes, Slipknot was the first band I listened to. They were the gateway that brought me into the world of metal.

Jino: หลังจากที่ได้เข้ามาในวงการอันเดอร์กราวด์ ได้ทำความรู้จักกับเพื่อนใหม่ ๆ ในวงการมาสักพัก จนถึงปี 2014 เราได้ชวนเพื่อนชาวไต้หวันชื่อ ‘แลร์รี หวัง’ มือเบสแห่งวง Maggot Colony มาทำ ‘Slamman Booking Asia’ ด้วยกัน เพราะเรานำวงของแลร์รีมาเล่นในไทยบ่อยจนสนิทกัน เราอยากนำวงที่เรามีคอนเน็กชันมาเล่นที่ไทยด้วยตัวเองครับ ตอนแรกเราอยากจัดแค่แนวเพลง Slam (ดนตรีแนว Slamming Brutal Death Metal ที่มีความดุดัน รุนแรง เน้นความหนักหน่วง บดขยี้) จนตอนหลังเรากลายเป็นทำทุกแนว ทั้ง EDM, DJ, HIP-HOP, INDIE, HARDCORE, METALCORE เราทำหมดเลย ถึงแม้ตอนนี้เราจะไม่ได้ทำแค่แนวเพลง Slam แล้ว แต่เรายังคงใช้ชื่อ ‘Slamman’ อยู่ ส่วนหนึ่งเป็นเพราะคนรู้จักเราในชื่อนี้ไปแล้ว

S4S: หน้าที่ของ Slamman ต้องทำอะไรบ้างครับ

Jino: ถ้าให้เปรียบเทียบง่าย ๆ เราเป็นเหมือนบริษัท Live Nation ครับ เรารับผิดชอบให้ทุกอย่าง ทั้งการดูแลศิลปิน ขายโชว์ ดูแลเรื่องวีซ่า ดูแล Merchandise จัดการความเรียบร้อยทุกอย่าง ด้วยความที่รู้ลึกรู้จริงในแต่ละพื้นที่ บวกกับตอนที่เราเริ่มจากการทำให้ฝั่งประเทศ Middle East ก่อน ทำให้ชื่อเสียงของ Slamman เพิ่มขึ้นอย่างก้าวกระโดดเลยครับ

S4S: การที่เป็น Booking Agency ต้องรับแรงกดดันจากทั้งลูกค้า และศิลปิน มีวิธีรับมือยังไงบ้างครับ?

Jino: เราต้องหาวิธีแก้ปัญหาครับ บางงานระยะเวลาไม่ใช่แค่ 1 ชั่วโมงแล้วเสร็จ แต่อาจจะเป็น 1 ปีหรือ 2 ปีกว่าจะจบงานได้ เราจึงต้องใช้ทั้งข้อเสนอกับคอนเน็กชันเข้ามาช่วยในการแก้ไขปัญหา เพราะถ้าเราได้รับฟีดแบคจากลูกค้าที่ไม่ดี มันอาจส่งผลต่อภาพลักษณ์ของเรา ส่งผลต่องานถัดไปของเรา เราเลยต้องหาวิธีรับมือ แล้วทำให้มันออกมาดีในทุก ๆ ครั้ง ทำให้ภาพลักษณ์ของเราดูแข็งแรงที่สุด เป็นการสร้างความน่าเชื่อถือ ทั้งฝั่งศิลปิน คนดู และผู้จัด ให้เขาเชื่อในตัวเราที่สุด

From a Kid Who Loved Music to the Founder of Slamman Booking Asia

Jino: After getting into the underground scene and meeting more people over time, in 2014, I partnered with a Taiwanese friend named ‘Larry Wang’, the bassist of Maggot Colony, to start ‘Slamman Booking Asia’. I had invited his band to play in Thailand so often that we became close friends. I wanted to bring bands I was connected with to perform in Thailand myself. At first, we only planned to focus on ‘Slam’ (a genre of slamming brutal death metal that’s heavy, aggressive, and crushing). But over time, we started booking all kinds of genres: EDM, DJs, hip-hop, indie, hardcore, metalcore, you name it. Even though we don’t focus solely on Slam anymore, we’ve kept the name ‘Slamman’, partly because it’s the name people know us by.

S4S: What exactly does Slamman do?

Jino: To put it simply, we’re like a smaller version of Live Nation. We handle everything, artist management, show bookings, visas, merchandise, you name it. Since we really understand the scene in each region, and because we first started with shows in the Middle East, that helped Slamman’s reputation grow rapidly.

S4S: As a booking agency, you must face pressure from both clients and artists. How do you handle that?

Jino: We have to find ways to solve problems. Some projects don’t just take an hour to finish. They can stretch over a year or even two. That’s why we need to use both negotiation and our connections to manage issues. If we receive negative feedback from clients, it can affect our image and impact future opportunities. So we need to handle things in a way that ensures every event turns out well and reinforces a strong, reliable image for artists, audiences, and organizers alike. It’s all about building trust.

S4S: เคยเจอปัญหาไหนที่ทำให้อยากเลิกทำไหมครับ

Jino: เคยครับ ตอนทำ Cradle of Filth ครับ ทุกคนรู้กันดีว่าเป็นวง Black Metal ที่ทำให้ราคาเสื้อวินเทจพุ่งสูงในช่วงเวลาหนึ่ง ตอนเราประกาศว่าจะมีวงนี้มาเล่น แฟน ๆ ก็รอคอย แต่เรากลับทำให้เขาไปเล่นที่จีนไม่ได้ เพราะออกเอกสารไม่ทัน ทำให้วงแคนเซิลงานทั้งหมด ไปเล่นงาน Hammersonic แค่งานเดียว ตอนนั้นเรายอมขาดทุนหลัก 5-10 ล้าน เพื่อรักษาเครดิตของเราไว้ เรายอมรับว่าเราผิดพลาด และนำข้อผิดพลาดไปปรับปรุงแก้ไขในครั้งถัดไปครับ แต่ถ้าเป็นไปได้ก็ยังอยากนำวง Cradle of Filth กลับมาเล่นอยู่ครับ

S4S: ‘การขาดทุน’ เป็นสิ่งที่คนในวงการนี้ต้องเจอกันทุกคนไหมครับ

Jino: ถ้าทำวงการนี้แล้วไม่ขาดทุน คนหันไปเล่นคริปโตกันหมดแล้วครับ แต่บางทีการขาดทุนไม่ได้เป็นแค่เรื่องเงิน คิดว่าผู้จัดหลายคนต้องเจอแบบนี้ วงเพื่อนจำเป็นต้องจัด อันนี้วงผู้จัดคนอื่นที่สนิทกันต้องจัด จัดเพื่อให้ได้คอนเน็กชันจัดเพื่อให้ชื่อเสียงบริษัทเดินต่อไปได้ ไม่รู้ว่าผู้จัดคนอื่นกล้าพูดไหม แต่มันเป็นสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นจริงในวงการนี้ เพราะถ้าอยากเติบโตทุกคนต้องเจอ แต่ว่าถ้าจัดแล้วขาดทุนเป็นร้อยครั้ง ทุกคนก็คงเลิกไปแล้ว แต่มันไม่มีใครหรอกที่จะขาดทุนทุกครั้ง

S4S: คิดว่าคอนเน็กชันสำคัญต่อวงการนี้แค่ไหนครับ

Jino: สำคัญมากครับ ถ้าวงการนี้ไม่มีคอนเน็กชันอยู่ไม่ได้แน่นอนครับ คอนเน็กชันไม่จำเป็นต้องเป็นเรื่องเงิน หรือพรรคพวก แต่มันเป็นความไว้ใจที่ทุกคนมีให้เรา สำหรับผมคอนเน็กชันคือสิ่งสำคัญที่สุดในวงการนี้ครับ

“ความสำเร็จมันไม่ได้เริ่มแค่ครั้งเดียวแล้วจะสำเร็จ บางครั้งต้องลองไม่รู้กี่ร้อยกี่พันครั้งกว่าจะสำเร็จ”

บางครั้งศิลปินที่เรารู้จักในทุกวันนี้ กว่าที่พวกเขาจะมีชื่อเสียงระดับโลกได้ ต้องผ่านอะไรมากมายกว่าจะมาถึงจุดนี้ แน่นอนว่าพวกเขามีฝีมือ ความสามารถที่เพรียบพร้อม แต่กว่าจะโลกจะได้รับรู้ ต้องอาศัยทั้งโอกาส จังหวะที่เหมาะสม การผลักดันที่ดี และใจที่ไม่ยอมแพ้กับอุปสรรค เราอยากทำให้ Slamman เป็นโอกาสเหล่านั้นให้กับทุกคน เพราะถ้าคุณมีความสามารถมากพอ บวกกับใจที่ไม่ยอมแพ้ต่ออุปสรรคที่เข้ามา คุณย่อมประสบความสำเร็จในสักวันหนึ่งแน่นอนครับ

S4S: Have you ever faced a problem so big it made you want to quit?

Jino: I have. It was during the time we worked with ‘Cradle of Filth’. Everyone knows them as a black metal band that once made vintage band tee prices skyrocket. When we announced they were coming, fans were really excited. But in the end, we couldn’t get them into China because we didn’t process the documents in time. As a result, the band cancelled all their shows except for one, Hammersonic. At that point, I accepted a loss of 5 to 10 million baht just to protect our credibility. I admitted our mistake and used that failure to improve things moving forward. That said, if the chance ever comes again, I’d still love to bring ‘Cradle of Filth’ back.

S4S: Is loss something that everyone in this industry has to face?

Jino: If people could do this job without losing money, everyone would’ve ditched it for crypto by now. But sometimes, the loss isn’t just financial. A lot of us end up organizing shows for friends’ bands out of necessity, or doing it as a favor for other promoters we’re close with. Sometimes we do it just to keep the company name alive or to strengthen our network. I don’t know if other promoters would openly admit this, but it’s the truth. If you want to grow, you have to go through it. Of course, if you’re losing money on every single gig, you wouldn’t stick around for long. But no one loses on every show.

S4S: How important are connections in this industry?

Jino: Incredibly important. Without them, you can’t survive here. And I don’t just mean financial connections or having a crew, it’s about trust. When people trust you, that’s what keeps things moving. For me, connections are the single most important part of this industry.

“Success doesn’t happen in one shot; sometimes it takes hundreds, even thousands of tries”

Some of the artists we know and love today didn’t reach global fame overnight. They went through so much before getting to where they are now. Of course, talent and skill are essential, but for the world to recognize them, it also took the right timing, the right opportunities, strong support, and most importantly, the heart to never give up. That’s what we want ‘Slamman’ to be: a gateway to those opportunities. Because if you have the talent and the determination to push through whatever obstacles come your way, then success will absolutely find you someday.

S4S: ตอนนี้ Slamman ได้มีโอกาสนำวงระดับโลกเข้ามาเล่นบ้างรึยังครับ

S4S: Has Slamman had the chance to bring in any world-class artists yet?

Jino: Recently, we had the chance to work with ‘Tatsuya Kitani’, the artist behind the opening theme of the popular anime ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’. We’ve also had multiple chances to bring in world-famous acts, but sometimes the market here in Thailand just isn’t quite ready. Still, even if we’re not the main promoter, being part of big events is something we’re proud of. Like when ‘The 1975’ or ‘Guns N’ Roses’ played in Thailand, ‘Slamman Crew’ was one of the top choices to work with them, and that’s something we hold in high regard.

S4S: ตอนที่ Slamman Crew ได้เข้าไปเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในคอนเสิร์ต Guns N’ Roses รู้สึกยังไงบ้างครับ

Jino: ประทับใจมากครับ เพราะเราต้องร่วมงานกับผู้จัดจากจีน ซึ่งเขาเป็นผู้จัดหลัก ความยากอยู่ที่การสื่อสารที่ใช้ทั้งไทย จีน อังกฤษ ด้วยความต่างของภาษา ทำให้การสื่อสารเกิดการคลาดเคลื่อนไปบ้าง ไม่เข้าใจกันบ้าง เราเลยเลือกใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นหลัก ทำให้งานมันเดินไปอย่างดีได้ จนตอนหลังทางวงเลือกที่จะคุยกับทางเรามากกว่า เพราะวงเชื่อในความเป็นคนในพื้นที่จริง ๆ แต่ไม่ได้หมายความว่าเราจะทำงานข้ามหน้าข้ามตาฝั่งจีน แค่ให้งานมันสามารถเดินต่อไปได้โดยไม่มีปัญหาครับ เป็นอีกหนึ่งงานที่หินสำหรับเรามากครับ เป็นประสบการณ์ที่ดีมาก ๆ ครับ

S4S: นำประสบการณ์เหล่านั้นมาปรับใช้กับ Slamman ยังไงบ้างครับ

Jino: การทำงานได้หลากหลายรูปแบบครับ วันนี้เราเป็นลูกน้องได้ วันหน้าเราต้องเป็นหัวหน้าได้ การที่เราได้ทำงานได้หลายรูปแบบ ทำให้เราได้ลองหลายรสชาติในการทำงาน สุดท้ายถ้าเราทำงานได้หลายอย่าง ย่อมเป็นคนที่ถูกเลือกก่อนเสมอครับ

S4S: คิดว่า Slamman ยังขาดคุณสมบัติอะไรที่ยังไม่สามารถนำวงระดับโลกเข้ามาไทยได้เหมือนผู้จัดรายใหญ่

Jino: ในความรู้สึกของผมคิดว่าเราขาดแบคอัพที่ดีครับ ในตอนนี้เราอาจจะยังไม่ใช่ผู้จัดรายใหญ่เท่ารายอื่น ๆ ผมคิดว่าถ้ามีคนกล้ามาลงทุนกับเรา หากเรามีเงินทุนที่มากกว่าเดิม มีคอนเน็กชันที่กว้างขวางขึ้น จะทำให้เราสามารถไปถึงจุดนั้นได้ เพราะเราเชื่อว่า Slamman มีศักยภาพมากพอไม่แพ้ผู้จัดรายอื่น ๆ เพียงแต่ขาดแรงสนับสนุนที่ดีครับ

S4S: How did it feel to have Slamman Crew be part of the Guns N’ Roses concert?

Jino: It was a really memorable experience. We worked with a promoter from China, who was the main organizer. The challenge was communication. We had to navigate between Thai, Chinese, and English. With the language differences, there were a few misunderstandings here and there. So we decided to use English as the primary language to keep things moving smoothly. Eventually, the band chose to communicate directly with us because they trusted our local expertise. That didn’t mean we tried to step over the Chinese team. It was simply to make sure the event ran without issues. It was one of the toughest shows we’ve done, but also one of the most rewarding experiences.

S4S: How have you used those past experiences to grow Slamman?

Jino: By being flexible in the roles I take on. One day you’re a team member, the next you’re leading the whole project. Taking on different roles has allowed me to experience all aspects of the job. And when you can do more than one thing, you’re more likely to be the one people trust and pick first.

S4S: In your opinion, what’s still missing for Slamman to be able to bring in world-class acts like the big-name promoters?

Jino: I think we lack a strong backup. Right now, we might not be as big as some of the major players in the scene. But I believe that if someone is willing to invest in us, if we had more capital and broader connections, we could definitely get there. I truly believe Slamman has just as much potential as any other major promoter. We’re just missing solid support.

S4S: ปรับตัวกับความเปลี่ยนแปลงที่รวดเร็วเหล่านี้ยังไงบ้างครับ

Jino: เราต้องรู้จักคำว่า ‘เปลี่ยนแปลง’ ครับ แล้วถ้าเรายิ่งไม่เข้าใจตลาด ไม่เข้าใจความต้องการของผู้ฟัง มันจะไม่สามารถพาเราไปสู่จุดที่ดีกว่าเดิมได้ครับ ผมเชื่อว่า ‘การกล้าที่จะเปลี่ยนแปลง’ กับ ‘ความเข้าใจตลาดแฟนเพลง’ สองอย่างนี้มันต้องมาด้วยกันครับ

S4S: แน่นอนว่าศิลปินเองก็ต้องปรับตัว เพราะยังมีหลายวงที่ดังในไทย ได้มาเล่นบ่อย แต่ก็มีหลายวงเช่นกันที่มีศักยภาพเทียบเท่าแต่ไม่ดังเท่า คิดว่าวงเหล่านี้ต้องปรับตัวยังไง

Jino: ผมเคยทำให้กับวงที่มาไทยครั้งแรก คนฟังน้อยมาก แต่พอมาครั้งที่สองคนฟังมากกว่าเดิม ผมคิดว่ามันไม่มีสูตรสำเร็จตายตัวครับ แต่คิดว่าสิ่งสำคัญคือ การทำคอนเทนต์ให้ผู้ฟังเข้าถึงเราได้ง่าย ผมกล้าพูดเลยว่ายุคนี้ 99% ทุกคนทำวิดีโอกันหมด แทบไม่มีใครทำเป็นบทความเหมือนยุคก่อนแล้ว สุดท้ายพอโลกมันเกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลง วิธีการนำเสนอก็ต้องเปลี่ยนตามครับ

It’s undeniable that Thailand’s music scene is going through rapid changes. The world today is more focused on online platforms, and listener behavior has shifted from what it used to be. People are drawn to different types of lyrics, concerts now often feature multiple artists, and songs are expected to be TikTok-friendly. All of this forces artists, record labels, and event organizers to constantly find ways to adapt and keep up with the changes.

S4S: How do you adapt to these rapid changes in the industry?

Jino: We have to truly understand the meaning of the word ‘change’. If we don’t understand the market or what listeners actually want, we’ll never move forward. I believe that ‘the willingness to change’ and ‘understanding your audience’ must go hand in hand.

S4S: Of course, artists also have to adapt. Some bands are already popular in Thailand and get invited to perform often. But there are others with just as much potential who haven’t reached the same level of fame. What do you think those bands need to do?

Jino: I’ve helped bands who played in Thailand for the first time and had barely any crowd. But the second time they came, way more people showed up. I don’t think there’s a fixed formula for success. But I do think creating content that’s easy for listeners to engage with is crucial. These days, I can confidently say 99% of artists are making videos, and no one really does long-form articles like before. As the world changes, so must the way we present ourselves.

Jino: เป็นผลดีมากครับ ถึงแม้เมื่อกี้ผมจะพูดว่าคนส่วนใหญ่หันมาเสนอผ่านวิดีโอกันหมด แต่โดยส่วนตัวยังชอบอ่านบทความที่แต่ละเพจเขียนอยู่ครับ เพราะบางคำพูดมันไม่สามารถสื่อออกมาผ่านวิดีโอได้ทั้งหมด แต่วิดีโอก็เป็นวิธีที่คนจะเข้าใจสิ่งที่เราอยากสื่อได้ง่าย รีแคปกับเนื้อหาได้เร็วกว่าการอ่านบทความ

S4S: ตอนนี้คนเริ่มผลักดันวงการเพลงไทย ให้ไปสู่สายตาชาวโลกมากขึ้น เช่น T-POP คิดว่าวงการเพลงอันเดอร์กราวด์ได้รับการผลักดันไปด้วยไหมครับ?

Jino: คิดว่าไม่ครับ ต้องบอกแบบนี้ผู้ฟังหน้าใหม่ในวงการอันเดอร์กราวด์เกิดใหม่น้อยครับ ส่วนใหญ่ที่ยังอยู่ได้เพราะผู้ฟังดั้งเดิมที่ทำให้วงการนี้ยังแข็งแรง เพียงแต่มันไม่โตขึ้น จากทั้งเพลงที่อาจจะไม่ใช่กระแสหลัก แต่ช่วงนี้เพลงฮาร์ดคอร์กลับมาฟื้นตัวมากขึ้น เพราะวง Whispers ทำให้เห็นแล้วว่า ถ้าคุณเจ๋งมากพอก็สามารถไปถึงสายตาชาวโลกได้

S4S: Now that people have easier access to media, do you think that’s a good thing for the underground music scene?

Jino: Definitely. Even though I mentioned earlier that most people are shifting toward video content, I still enjoy reading well-written articles. Some messages just don’t come across as clearly in video, but videos help audiences understand the message more quickly and recap key points faster than reading.

S4S: These days, we’re seeing more efforts to push Thai music into the global spotlight, like T-POP. Do you think the underground scene is being supported in the same way?

Jino: I don’t think so. The number of new listeners entering the underground scene is pretty low. The scene is still going thanks to the original fans who’ve supported it from the start. But it’s not expanding. That’s partly because the music doesn’t fit mainstream tastes. Still, hardcore is seeing a bit of a revival right now. Look at ‘Whispers’, they’ve shown that if you’re truly great, you can reach the global stage.

Jino’s latest venture, ‘Slam Rap’, sets out to spotlight rising Thai rappers with global potential.

Jino’s newest project, ‘Slam Rap’, is a collaboration with ‘Pao PP’Dreams’, aimed at pushing Thai rappers who’ve never had the spotlight onto the global stage. Take a closer look and you’ll see that Thailand still lacks hip-hop-focused concerts and festivals. That’s why the two of them came together to create this event: to give both old-school and new-school rappers a chance to shine, and to inject new life into the country’s hip-hop scene.

Jino: เราทำวงการเมทัลฮาร์ดคอร์จนสำเร็จแล้ว บวกกับเราได้ไปเห็นแรปเปอร์ในไทยมีจำนวนเยอะมาก แต่ไม่ได้รับโอกาส อย่างตอนนี้ได้ยินเพลงของ Z9 ใน TikTok บ่อย แต่ไม่รู้เลยว่าเขาดังระดับที่มียอดวิวมันหลักสิบล้านเลยเหรอ คิดว่ามันน่าสนใจดี ผมเลยไปคุยกับเปา PP’DREAMS ชวนมาทำด้วยกัน เพราะเขาเป็นแรปเปอร์อยู่แล้ว เป็นคนที่รู้จักวงการนี้เป็นอย่างดี เหมือนการทำครั้งนี้มาเติมไฟซึ่งกันและกัน ทั้งผมทั้งตัวเปาเอง ทำให้เรารู้เลยว่าจริง ๆ วงการฮิปฮอปในไทยไม่ธรรมดาเลย

S4S: อะไรเป็นสิ่งที่ได้เรียนรู้จากการทำ Booking Agency ครับ

Jino: “การเป็นคนที่ไม่อ่อนเกินไป ไม่แข็งเกินไป เจรจาให้เป็น” คือสิ่งที่ผมได้เรียนรู้ตลอดระยะเวลาที่ทำ Booking Agency ครับ ถ้าให้เปรียบง่าย ๆ เหมือนการเจรจาการเมืองอยู่เหมือนกัน การทำวงการนี้ให้ความรู้สึกแบบนั้น

นอกจากบทบาท Booking Agency ที่สำคัญต่อการจัดคอนเสิร์ตแล้ว อีกหนึ่งหน้าที่ที่สำคัญไม่แพ้กัน คือ Tour Manager ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่จีโน่ทำควบคู่กันมาตลอด และทำทั้งสองอย่างได้ดี

S4S: Tell us about the origins of Slam Rap. How did it come about?

Jino: After finding success in the metal and hardcore scenes, I started noticing the number of rappers in Thailand who are incredibly talented but haven’t been given a platform. For example, I kept hearing ‘Z9’ on TikTok, but I had no idea his music was pulling tens of millions of views. That really piqued my interest. So I reached out to ‘Pao PP’DREAMS’, who’s already a part of the rap scene and knows it inside out. It felt like we were reigniting each other’s passion. This project showed us both that Thai hip-hop is far more exciting and alive than people realize.

S4S: What’s something you’ve learned from running a booking agency?

Jino: What I’ve learned is: “Don’t be too soft, and don’t be too hard. Know how to negotiate.” That’s the biggest lesson from working in this business. If I had to compare it to something, I’d say it’s a lot like political negotiation. That’s exactly what it feels like sometimes in this industry.

Aside from his role as a booking agent, Jino also plays another equally important role: a tour manager. He has been balancing both responsibilities side by side and handling them with skill.

Jino: Booking Agency ขายงาน ดูแลผลประโยชน์ ส่วน Tour Manager ดูแลหน้างานให้เรียบร้อย ไม่มีปัญหา ความต่างมันแบบเห็นภาพ ง่าย ๆ แค่นี้เลยครับ

S4S: ตอนนี้มีไปทัวร์กับวงไหนบ้างครับ

Jino: ตอนนี้มี Northlane ครับ เดี๋ยวจะมี I See Stars ตอนช่วงเดือนตุลาคม แล้วก็วงอื่น ๆ ที่กำลังจะเกิดขึ้นครับ มีหลากหลายแนวเลยซึ่งแต่ละวง การดูแลก็แตกต่างกัน อย่างตอน Tatsuya Kitani แฟนเพลงก็สุดขั้วมาก มารอตั้งแต่เช้าเพื่อเข้าตอนประตูเปิด หรือตอนดูแล A$AP Ferg แรปเปอร์ระดับโลก ก็มีวิธีที่แตกต่างไป เราต้องปรับตัวและเรียนรู้ให้เข้ากับตัวศิลปิน แฟนเพลง วัฒนธรรมด้วยครับ

S4S: How did you first get into tour management?

Jino: It started with me wanting to go on tour with bands. I wanted to see how other promoters worked, how they handled things, so I could apply that knowledge myself and determine what should and shouldn’t be done. I learned by asking other promoters and also through firsthand experience touring with bands. My goal is always to make things as smooth and convenient as possible for everyone involved. I’m willing to invest if that’s what it takes to make the show run perfectly.

S4S: What’s the difference between a booking agent and a tour manager?

Jino: A booking agent handles sales and manages the business side, while a tour manager takes care of everything on the ground and makes sure things run smoothly. The difference is pretty clear-cut; it’s as simple as that.

S4S: Which artists have you toured with recently?

Jino: Right now I’m touring with ‘Northlane’, and ‘I See Stars’ is coming up in October. There are also more bands in the pipeline, across a variety of genres. Each one needs a different kind of care. Like with ‘Tatsuya Kitani’, his fans are incredibly passionate. Some of them waited outside from early morning just to get in at door time. Or with ‘A$AP Ferg’, a world-class rapper, the management style was different. You have to adapt to the artist, the fans, and even the culture around each show.

Jino: ค่อนข้างท้าทายครับ เราย่อมโดนสบประมาทอยู่แล้วด้วยการที่เราเป็นผู้จัด เพราะเราเป็นผู้จัดยังไงเราก็ได้ขึ้นโชว์อยู่แล้ว ทำให้เราต้องพัฒนาตัวเองให้มากขึ้นเพื่อลบคำสบประมาทเหล่านั้นครับ ทุกวันนี้ฟีดแบคก็ดีครับ เพราะเราตั้งใจกับบทบาทนี้จริง ๆ ครับ

S4S: ระหว่างเบื้องหน้าหรือเบื้องหลัง ชอบพาร์ทไหนที่สุดครับ

Jino: โอ้! พูดจริง ๆ ว่าตอบไม่ได้ครับ แต่ถ้าให้เลือกอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง ขอเลือกเบื้องหลังครับ เพราะเบื้องหน้าต้องแบกรับแรงกดดันหลายอย่าง มันคนละแบบกับเบื้องหลัง

S4S: ทำงานหลายอย่างแบบนี้ แบ่งเวลายังไงให้ทุกอย่างลงตัว

Jino: ยอมรับตรง ๆ เลยครับว่าเคยงานโหลด ทำไม่ทัน แต่เราพยายามทำให้มันเป็นแพตเทิร์นในการจัดการแต่ละงานให้ง่ายที่สุด พยายามไม่ทำตัวเอื่อย มีปัญหาอะไรเข้ามาแก้ทันที มีงานเข้ามาลงมือทำเลย นี่คือกฎที่ผมตั้งไว้กับตัวเองครับ

S4S: How do you feel about being the lead vocalist for ‘Pathological Sadism’ and ‘Encephalitis’?

Jino: It’s definitely a challenge. As a promoter, I’ve had people doubt me, saying I only get to perform because I run the shows. That kind of talk pushes me to constantly improve and prove myself. These days, the feedback has been really positive, and that’s because I genuinely put my heart into this role.

S4S: Between being in the spotlight and working behind the scenes, which do you enjoy more?

Jino: Oh, that’s a tough one. I honestly can’t pick. But if I had to choose, I’d go with working behind the scenes. Being on stage comes with a lot of pressure. It’s a totally different kind of stress compared to backstage work.

S4S: With so many responsibilities, how do you manage your time and keep everything on track?

Jino: I’ll admit, there were times when I was overwhelmed. But I’ve learned to create a workflow that helps me manage everything more smoothly. I try to avoid dragging things out; if there’s a problem, I fix it right away. If there’s work to be done, I get on it immediately. That’s the rule I live by.

S4S: ตอนนี้มีเป้าหมายส่วนตัวไหม อยากทำอะไร

Jino: ผมยังอยากอยู่ในวงการนี้ต่อไป จนกว่าจะร่างกายจะไม่ไหวครับ เพราะดนตรีทำให้ผมได้ออกมาเจอผู้คน ผมชอบเจอผู้คนใหม่ ๆ ครับ

S4S: มีการวางเป้าหมายให้ Slamman ไหม ว่าอยากจะไปถึงจุดไหน

Jino: สารภาพเลยว่าไม่เคยคิดถึงเรื่องนี้ หรือวางเป็นเป้าหมายแบบจริงจัง แต่ตอนนี้รู้สึกอยากทำให้ Slamman ไปได้ไกลระดับโลกแบบที่ผู้จัดระดับรายใหญ่ทำได้ครับ

S4S: ฝากอะไรถึงคนที่กำลังสนใจวงการอันเดอร์กราวด์หน่อยครับ

Jino: การหาตัวตน และความชอบของตัวเองเจอให้เร็วที่สุด จะทำให้คุณได้เริ่มในสิ่งที่ชอบได้เร็วกว่าคนอื่น ได้ลงมือทำเต็มที่ ได้ลองผิดลองถูก ยิ่งเราอยู่ในยุคที่หาข้อมูลได้ง่ายด้วย การหาตัวตนของตัวเองเจอเร็วเป็นสิ่งสำคัญมาก ๆ ครับในมุมมองของผม

S4S: Do you have any personal dreams or goals you’re working toward?

Jino: I just want to stay in this industry for as long as I physically can. Music has opened the door for me to meet so many people, and I genuinely love meeting new faces.

S4S: And do you have a long-term goal for Slamman? Where do you hope to take it?

Jino: Honestly, I’ve never sat down and seriously mapped that out. But right now, I just want to take Slamman as far as it can go, reaching a global level, like some of the biggest names in the business have.

S4S: Any words of advice for those who are curious about the underground music scene?

Jino: Find your identity and your passion as early as you can. The sooner you figure that out, the sooner you can start doing what you love. Go all in, make mistakes, and learn from them. Especially now, when it’s so easy to access information, I believe that knowing who you are early on is incredibly important.

Jino: I’d love to shout out ‘Slamman Booking Asia’, ‘Slamman Crew’, and all the exciting projects we’ve got coming up. Ai : ได้สิ! ฉันเปิดบาร์อยู่ที่กรุงเทพฯ ค่ะ ชื่อว่า Lemon Bar อยู่ที่ซอยสุขุมวิท 43 จุดเด่นของเราคือฉันพยายามนำเสนอเครื่องดื่มแบบที่คนญี่ปุ่นชอบกันค่ะ มาที่นี่ก็เหมือนได้ไปเที่ยวญี่ปุ่นเลย ที่นี่จะเน้น Lemon Sour, Beer, Cocktail ซึ่งเราให้ความสำคัญกับรสชาติมากนะ ได้สูตรมาจากญี่ปุ่นเลย ที่สำคัญคือเรื่องบรรยากาศที่เราตั้งใจทำให้แขกทุกคนผ่อนคลาย รับรองว่ามาแล้วมีความสุขแน่นอน เราอยากให้คุณดื่มเยอะ ๆ คุยเยอะ ๆ ใช้เวลาให้คุ้มค่าที่สุดในบาร์ของเรา ดังนั้นถ้าถามว่ามา Lemon Bangkok แล้วควรจะลองเมนูไหนที่สุด ฉันก็คงตอบว่าคุณต้องลอง Lemon Sour ของฉันนะ ! อย่างไม่ลังเลเลยล่ะค่ะ

S4S : บรรยากาศร้านค้ากลางคืนของไทยแตกต่างกับที่ญี่ปุ่นไหม

AI : เอาจริงก็ไม่ต่างกันหรอกค่ะ ขึ้นอยู่กับว่าแต่ละวันจะได้เจอคนแบบไหนมากกว่า ถ้าดีก็ดี ถ้าไม่ดีก็ไม่ดี ถือเป็นเรื่องปกติของการเปิดบาร์แบบนี้ค่ะ

S4S : การที่ไอจังเป็นศิลปินที่มีชื่อเสียงส่งผลดีต่อการทำธุรกิจไหม

Ai : ฉันคิดว่ามีผลแน่เลยล่ะค่ะ อย่างแรกคือมีแฟน ๆ ของฉันมากมายที่คอยสนับสนุนผลงานของฉันและตามมาที่บาร์แห่งนี้ ไม่ว่าจะในแบบส่วนตัวหรือในตอนที่มีงานอีเวนท์ของฉัน ที่สำคัญฉันหวังว่าบาร์แห่งนี้จะทำหน้าที่เป็นสื่อกลางให้กับศิลปินท่านอื่นในแวดวงของฉันเช่นกัน หากทำได้สำเร็จก็คงเป็นเรื่องที่วิเศษมากเลยค่ะ

S4S : ไอจังรู้สึกอย่างไรกับการสนับสนุนจากแฟน ๆ ชาวไทย

AI : ฉันมีความประทับใจและความทรงจำที่ดีมากมายเกี่ยวกับแฟน ๆ จากเมืองไทยค่ะ พวกเขาสนับสนุนฉันตลอดเวลา และมีรอยยิ้มให้ฉันเสมอ ทุกคนใจดีกับฉันมาก ถือเป็นประเทศที่ฉันรักมากที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งเลยค่ะ

S4S : ไอจังอยากให้คนจดจำ ‘Ai Uehara’ แบบไหน เช่น อยากให้คนมองว่าตัวเองเป็นศิลปิน หรือเป็นนักธุรกิจมากกว่ากัน

AI : จริงอยู่ที่ฉันเคยเป็นดาราเอวีค่ะ แต่ตัวฉันในบทบาทนั้นก็จบลงไปเกือบ 10 ปีแล้ว ฉันพูดได้เลยว่าตัวเองกลายเป็นนักธุรกิจเต็มตัวที่ทำบริษัทในหลากหลายวงการทั้งในญี่ปุ่นและเมืองไทย ดังนั้นฉันยินดีมากที่คุณเคยเป็นแฟนคลับและติดตามผลงานของฉัน แต่ฉันก็อยากให้คุณติดตามบทบาทในปัจจุบันด้วยค่ะ
