Glass sculpture is a form of artistic creation made from glass, using techniques such as glassblowing, casting, and cutting to form unique shapes and visually striking works. Today, S4S invites you to get to know Matt “Elbo” Selbovitz also known in the art world as ELBO GLASS a world-class glass artist who has collaborated with brands like The Hundreds, Topps, and #FR2.

S4S: ทำไมคุณถึงเลือกที่จะมาอยู่ที่ประเทศไทย?

S4S: Please introduce yourself.
Elbo: Hello, my name is ‘Elbo,’ also known as ‘Elbo Glass.’ I’m a glass artist from the United States.
ELBO GLASS is a globally recognized glass artist known for his functional glass works, combining usability with his signature “dinosaur” motifs, creating glass pieces that are both artistic and practical.
S4S: Why did you choose to live in Thailand?
Elbo: When I first came here, I was surprised by the energy of the people, as well as the art and culture. I completely fell in love with it.
S4S: Is there a place in Thailand that you especially fell in love with?
Elbo: For me, it has to be Bangkok. The energy of the people here reminds me of New York City.
S4S: When did you first discover glassblowing as an art form?
Elbo: I was introduced to glass art at the Tyler School of Art & Architecture at Temple University, where I learned the fundamentals of glassblowing.
S4S: คุณเลือกทำศิลปะเป่าแก้วเป็นอย่างแรกเลยไหม หรือเคยทำศิลปะแขนงอื่นมาก่อน?
Elbo: ก่อนที่จะมาทำศิลปะเป่าแก้ว ช่วงวัยรุ่นผมทำแต่งานจิตรกรรมเลยครับ ก่อนจะเริ่มให้มาศึกษาและสร้างสรรค์ผลงานรูปแบบ 3 มิติ
S4S: แล้วอะไรคือเสน่ห์ของศิลปะที่ทำให้คุณชื่นชอบ
Elbo: คุณรู้ไหม? ครั้งแรกที่ผมสัมผัสแก้ว ผมรู้ได้เลยว่านี่คือสิ่งที่ผมจะทำไปตลอดชีวิต การเป่าแก้วช่วยเปิดมุมมองใหม่ ๆ ให้กับผม พอครั้งที่แรกที่ได้สัมผัสมัน ผมรู้สึกว่ามันเป็นวัสดุที่ให้ความรู้สึกเหมือนเอเลี่ยน ซึ่งศิลปะเป่าแก้วมันอาจไม่น่าสนใจสำหรับคนอื่น เหมือนกับจิตรกรรม หรือปั้นดินเผา แต่ครั้งแรกที่คุณได้สัมผัสกับแก้วมันจะทำให้เหมือนคุณได้เกิดใหม่เลย
S4S: กระบวนการทำงานของการเป่าแก้ว มีความแตกต่างจากศิลปะรูปแบบอื่นไหม?

S4S: Was glass art your first artistic path, or did you explore other art forms before that?
Elbo: Before glassblowing, I focused entirely on painting during my teenage years, before I explored three-dimensional works.
S4S: What is it about art that makes you so passionate?
Elbo: You know what? The first time I touched glass, I immediately knew this was what I would do for the rest of my life. Glassblowing opened new perspectives for me. The first time I worked with it, I felt like glass was an ‘alien’ material. Glass art may not be as approachable as painting or ceramics for some people, but the first time you truly experience glass, it feels like being reborn.
S4S: Is the glassblowing process different from other forms of art?
Elbo: It’s definitely different. Glass is a material that requires a lot of caution because it can break at any moment while you’re working. That’s why every step needs close attention, and a single piece can take weeks or even months to complete. Because glass is such a fragile material, this is what really sets glass art apart from other art forms.
S4S: Does it feel similar to working with clay, from your perspective?
Elbo: When you’re working with clay, if you don’t like the shape, it’s easy to reshape it or start over. The same goes for painting, where you can paint over mistakes. But that doesn’t apply to glassblowing, because the material is extremely is not forgiving and cannot be worked in the same way.
S4S: Do you remember your very first piece?
Elbo: I think it was a drinking glass. It was one of the first things I tried to make, and it’s actually very difficult to turn it into any other shape. But if we’re talking about my first true art piece as Elbo, it would be a ‘pickle jar with glass pickles inside.’

S4S: การที่ได้ร่วมงานกับแบรนด์ระดับโลกอย่าง The Hundreds, Topps และ #FR2 รู้สึกยังไงบ้าง?
Elbo: ปกติผมทำผลงานอยู่แต่ในสตูดิโอของตัวเอง การที่ผมได้ไปร่วมทำงานกับแบรนด์ระดับโลก ทำให้ผมได้พบเจอผู้คนใหม่ ๆ วัฒนธรรมใหม่ ๆ นั่นทำให้ผมได้มีไอเดีย และแนวคิดในการทำงานที่กว้างขี้น
Beyond the intricate details and delicate craftsmanship of his glassblowing work, another defining symbol of Elbo’s identity is the ‘dinosaur.’ This signature motif, which makes his work instantly recognizable, originates from a deeply personal story that became a lasting source of inspiration and evolved into a hallmark of his art.
S4S: The dinosaur that appears as a signature in your work came from a gift from someone you loved, right?
Elbo: When I first started my journey in glassblowing, I was dating someone at the time. She gave me a small ‘glass dinosaur’ as a gift. Even though we later went our separate ways, that gift sparked something in me and became a major source of inspiration.
Through his distinctive body of work, Elbo has grown into a world-class glass artist whose creations have attracted collaborations with global brands such as The Hundreds, Topps, and most recently the Japanese streetwear label #FR2 (Fxxking Rabbits).
S4S: How does it feel to collaborate with global brands like The Hundreds, Topps, and #FR2?
Elbo: Normally, I work alone in my own studio. Getting the chance to collaborate with global brands allows me to meet new people and experience new cultures. That exposure has helped broaden my ideas and creative perspective.
S4S: ในอนาคตมีแบรนด์ไหนที่คุณอยากร่วมงานด้วยไหม?
Elbo: แบรนด์ที่ผมอยากร่วมงานด้วยคือ ‘Rimowa’ ครับ เป็นการร่วมงานในฝันของผมเลย
S4S: นอกจากแบรนด์ในฝันแล้ว มีศิลปินไทยคนไหนที่คุณอยากร่วมงานด้วยไหม?
Elbo: ถ้าเป็นไปได้ผมอยากร่วมงานกับ ‘HAIHAITOON’ ครับ เขาเป็นศิลปินจิตรกรรมที่ผมชื่นชอบที่สุดในไทยตอนนี้ หรืออาจจะเป็น ‘Alex Face’ เป็นอีกหนึ่งศิลปินที่สุดยอดมากที่อยู่ที่นี่ แต่ถ้าเลือกได้คงเป็น ‘HAIHAITOON’ คาดหวังให้เป็นแบบนั้นครับ
S4S: Are there any brands you dream of collaborating with in the future?
Elbo: The brand I’d love to work with is Rimowa. It’s truly a dream collaboration for me.
S4S: Besides dream brands, are there any Thai artists you’d like to collaborate with?
Elbo: If possible, I’d love to work with ‘HAIHAITOON.’ He’s my favorite painter in Thailand right now. Another artist I really admire is ‘Alex Face,’ who is also incredibly talented. But if I had to choose one, it would definitely be ‘HAIHAITOON.’ That’s what I’m hoping for.
S4S: แล้วคิดว่าศิลปะเป่าแก้วจะสามารถเข้าไปแทรกซึมอยู่ในวัฒนธรรมอื่น ๆ ได้เหมือนศิลปะแขนงอื่นไหม?
Elbo: ผมคิดว่า ‘ศิลปะเป่าแก้ว’ มีรากฐานที่แข็งแรง เพราะศิลปะรูปแบบนี้แทรกซึมอยู่ในชีวิตประจำวันของเราเป็นปกติอยู่แล้ว อีกทั้งตอนนี้ผู้คนยังสามารถเรียนรู้ศิลปะรูปแบบนี้ผ่านสื่อต่าง ๆ ได้โดยง่าย ทำให้ผมรู้สึกว่าตอนนี้ศิลปะเป่าแก้วอยู่ในระดับสากลแล้ว
S4S: คุณมีเป้าหมายที่จะผลักดันศิลปะเป่าแก้วให้ไปถึงระดับไหน และอยากส่งต่อศิลปะแนวนี้ให้คนรุ่นใหม่ได้รู้ยังไง
Elbo: เป้าหมายของผมคือ ผมอยากฝากผลงานของตัวเองไว้ในหน้าประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะ และหวังว่างานเหล่านั้นจะได้ไปจัดแสดงในแกลเลอรีและพิพิธภัณฑ์ทั่วโลก เพื่อส่งต่อแรงบันดาลใจให้กับคนรุ่นต่อไป
S4S: Do you think glassblowing can integrate into other cultures in the same way as other art forms?
Elbo: I believe glassblowing has a very strong foundation, because glass already exists in our everyday lives. People can now easily learn about this art form through different media as well. That’s why I feel glassblowing has already reached a global level.
S4S: How far do you hope to take glassblowing as an art form, and how would you like to pass it on to the next generation?
Elbo: My goal is to leave my work in the history of art. I hope my pieces will be exhibited in galleries and museums around the world so they can inspire future generations.
